Some of my platycerium

This thread has been quiet for sometime and just to spice it up with some picts of my plants. Mostly are old giants and I'm getting worried as they are getting bigger and bigger.

bifurcatum with it's root ball about 3' diameter and still growing........
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...t/DSCF4336.jpg

My old ridleyii...I think it's abt 6-8 yrs with me.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...t/DSCF4327.jpg

holtumii. I must thank Tarence for this plant as it's a gift from him. Currently it measures 5' across.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...t/DSCF4331.jpg

elephantotis. This is the long form variant. The fertile frond itself is reaching up to 2' long.

Re: Some of my platycerium

These plants sure have a great sentimental value Andy. I have one vinicoloured raff that has been with me ever since I started growing Nepenthes, now it's close to 8 years. Day in day out you water the plant and watch it grow and pitcher.

Your ridleyii and holtumii are crazy beautiful specimens I must say. Your bifurcatum, you can start dividing the babies and grow them separately. Or you can shift it to another tree which can support its bulk better. Is it hanging on a small tree trunk? It looks alarmingly heavy...*biggrin2*

Re: Some of my platycerium

Oh....dividing my bifurcatum!:spinning:....Then I'll have hundreds of plants. More chores!!! Better not. I better let it be as it is. Do you keep any?

Re: Some of my platycerium

Yes. bifurcatum. *biggrin2* I want to get a coronarium this time. Oh yeah, just wondering what are those platys selling in the shopping malls at some point. Looks fuzzy like wandae but I don't know...

David 12th May 2009 10:46 AM

Re: Some of my platycerium

If you're talking about those in shopping malls in KL, I think thy are P. bifurcatum.

You guys kow where to get holtumii and redleyii? Been looking for them. Sometimes can find redleyii but the price is just crazy. But I've never seen holtumii. Maybe I did see it but don't know it is holtumii... haa, haaa.

Andy, your holtumii is beautiful.

Elephatotis if just spectacular. I think the cher size of it is enough to make you "wow!" I have one given to me by TS but stil a little baby about 2 inches across. Can't wait for it to grow up... But I am cracking my head thinking where to put this giant in my apartment. My window area is just pack with Tills and other oddities.

Re: Some of my platycerium

David, you might want to try Ukay Nursery. There's some ridleyiithere last time I went to check. Big plants though. Have you tried looking at the sg buloh nurseries?

David 12th May 2009 02:54 PM

Re: Some of my platycerium

I've looked at Sg. buloh before but did not find holtumii. Found a few ridleyii but very expensive

atmccmn 12th May 2009 11:10 PM

Re: Some of my platycerium

Thanks David for your compliment. Initially when I received it was in no good condition. Totally different from now. I'm not sure where you can buy a holtumii but I can take you to their natural habitat if you want.*biggrin2*

During the show, there are stalls who sell spores germinated seedlings with roughly 3-4" shield fronds. It goes for abt RM40-60. Some smaller plants go for RM30-35 with 2-3" shield frond. I can lookout for you if you want. I don't know whether Sg Buloh have this kind of stock? Last time when I bought them there, they were available abundantly. It goes for abt RM 30 for a mature plant! I think the seller must have misquoted me!

Alvin, how does the fuzzy looking platy looks like? Further description?

David 13th May 2009 10:13 AM

Re: Some of my platycerium

Andy,

Those are ridleyii or holtumi that you say you saw during the show? I was just at Sg. Buloh yesterday. Only saw bifurcatum there. I would be interested if you come across them again. Let me know ya. Thanks a million.

Re: Some of my platycerium

They are ridleyii.....you are coming up to Pg right! Then you don't have any problem getting it. I'll get for you if you couldn't make it here.:2thumbup:

Re: Some of my platycerium

Andy, hard to describe the appearance as it will probably be the same for other platys. I will snap a hp pic and wire to the pc. I went to New trio nursery and found they were the ones distributing this mystery platy to ACE hardware. *biggrin2*

Re: Some of my platycerium

My further questions if you don't mind.....single head plant or multiple heads?
The shield frond is broad pointing upward or very compact covering the rootball?:smile:

Re: Some of my platycerium

Hi guys, I seem to have missed this one while traveling! Here's a link to a Thai woman (Wanna) who produces and sells Platyceriums of all kinds. She also runs an agricultural supply company where I often buy peat moss, etc. Most of her site is in Thai but she has been putting in more and more English and speaks/writes English very well. Have a look and check back often as the plants change week to week. She carries a very good mix of platys and loves to share info regarding growing them. (David - she has holtumii in 4" pots for $7 us and ridleyii for $15).

http://www.bloggang.com/viewdiary.ph...ipper&group=25

She also is instrumental in publicising a fern website here in Thailand;
http://forum.iloveferns.com/index.php/board,7.0.html

and a few other interesting/useful platy sites in T-land;
http://www.iloveferns.com/ (also Wanna's, I think)

Fernsbangkok;

SiamExotica;

Shawn,
Does she supply to KL?

shawnintland 8th July 2009 01:33 PM

Re: Some of my platycerium

I believe that she ships everywhere. I know people in Japan that buy from her regularly. I also found that she did a wonderful job of packing everything safely - though I hate the Styrofoam 'peanuts'!

Re: Some of my platycerium

Saw some of your posting there, Shawn. :biggrin: I'm always amazed how they keep their plants in tip top condition. The fronds are not only green but in deep green. I was wondering whether she's working with a group of grower or own a specialised nursery herself. Some of the latter hybrids are simply amazing. Not to mention the price too.

shawnintland 8th July 2009 03:12 PM

Re: Some of my platycerium

I think she does it herself in her own nursery, but she is in very close contact with all of us growing platys in Thailand and many outside of the country. (See her greenhouse link on the opening page). I attribute the nice deep green to the peat moss I buy from her! I used to use sphagnum for my sporelings until she suggested I change...wow - glad I did! Remember...she also owns/operates an agricultural supply company! There are a number of others growing hybrid combos here and what's available is always changing.

Thanks for the links Shawn. US$7 in a 4" pot is really a good deal. Will check her website out.

Re: Some of my platycerium

Thanks shawn for the info. she really hv lot of nice platy with good price.
may be we can do a mass order if more people r interested.

ps: saw 1 of the nursery at sg buloh selling platycerium (not bifurcatum) from YG at RM25 each. if u r interested, the nursery is located at the back of the hospital beside those nurseries that sell orchid.

Re: Some of my platycerium

Boon Leng, are you describing the one with only shield frond clasping tightly to the pot with some fingers (or 1/2 fingers) pointing up? THe whole plant have some fine hairs that makes it looks a bit silvery. If yes, that's superbum from originated in North Australia.

Ya, if you are planning to order from Wanna, count me in.:2thumbup:

I only suspect is either grande or superbum, but im no expert.. cant tell the difference :shy:

Hi Andy,
I bought one of them... can you share with us some culture information please? So far, I have not repot it.

atmccmn 11th July 2009 11:08 AM

Re: Some of my platycerium

YOu can mount it as like what you usually see in fern websites. Get a fern slab and directly attach the plant to the slab with spaghnum moss in between slab and the plant's rootball. I have a feeling that this plant like cool dry enviroment. Previously mine was doing very well during the dry weather but it just simply 'melt' away during our wet weather. Hope it's doing well at your place.

Andy, the plant is single head, and the shield frond is lettuce like, covering the rootball. the branching tips stand outwards like a fountain splashing upwards, hope you get the idea....you think it's superbum?
