« Thread Started on 24 Oct, 2007, 13:53 »being sick of the heavy rains battering up my drosera, i decided to build a rain shelter for them.

the shelters are 2'x3'x2' tall. now, just to see how well these shelters are going to hold out against the heavy rains expected for the week. if they do work as well as i hope that they will, i should be able to house all of my current drosera collection under them with room for expansion! wheeee~

« Reply #1 on 24 Oct, 2007, 15:29 »hongrui, nice protection for your `****es`. so far, my adult sundews have been able to withstand the raindrops. i do worry about the younger plants tho.

do you plan to elevate the sundew pots underneath the shelter ? coz sometimes the raindrops splatters on the ground ( oops, yours is a combo of wood & tiles) and sploshes sideways onto the pots.

i guess the penetrative light levels should be fine ya ? mmmmm....i`m getting ideas for my own sundews.

is this the balcony area ? is this where your new colony of sundews is gonna be housed ? *smile*

« Reply #2 on 24 Oct, 2007, 18:25 »Nice shelter hongrui. Looks very steady and could withstand a storm. I'm thinking the same thing as Tarence too. Perhaps you could build another shelf at the bottom to allevate the plants from the ground so that your "****es" would be protected by splattered raindrops from the ground. Aslo if they are nearrer to the top of the polycarbonate roof, less rain wouls also get to the sundews when wind blows the rain sideways... yes tarence, this is at my balcony. still got lots of space left heh heh. i'll have even more space downstairs for my neps after i move my drosera collection up.

i don't think i'll be constructing another shelf (too much trouble), but i might be adding a 'skirt' using clear plastic sheet to block out rain coming in from the side, but i'm worried about the lack of ventilation, so i'll just be monitoring the situation first and see how it goes.
