Question : Inducing nepenthes to produce basal shoots
 

Hi everyone

Well sorry if i have been recently opening to many threads....This is probally because i pratically have nothing to do except sit in front of the computer and surf the net and when i surf the net it means PET PITCHER!!!!!.....

Well now the questions

I have heard of many ways to induce the nepenthes to produce basal shoots like tilting the nep or stuff like that.If i would to have a nep which i can see the lower part of the nep which is where basals emerge from.....If that was above the pot and i add in some LFS and cover it up will it produce basals?????

2nd one is about seedlings

Ummm just a little pintless questions.....When do seedlings or planlets start producing they're own roots??????And normally about how big are they when they do.

3rd

Same as the 2nd only thing different is that when do "basals" produce they're own roots and stop relying on they're mother plant.

okay. from my experience, when my miranda or ampullaria or gracilis grow extremely extremely long and the main shoot is hanging, a lot of basals will appear.

its okay asking questions. you learn by asking questions. even in class. :2thumbup:

Well i asked it because I can see the yellowish bottom of my miranda (where the basals appear) I put just a little LFS to cover it up a little hoping that basals actually appear....My miranda is nowhere near tall its around 22cm which is around 8.5"

Basals emerge becos the axillary nodes down there no longer are affected by apical dominance. The apical point produces the plant hormone, auxin, that travels downwards and suppress axillary shoots frm growing if their concentration is sufficiently high. As the plant groes too tall, not enough auxin reaches the nodes down there, hence they grow out. Bending the plant also prevents auxin from reaching the lower nodes (though the effectiveness of this method depends on many factors), hence the emergence of basal. The surest way to produce basals is to kill apical dominance, whether by looping off the apical point or bending the vine to prevent translocation of auxin to the lower nodes.

Wow poweramps like CPnut said you POWER la...hhahaha.............Talk about detail.....So i guess just by covering over the "apical point" it doesn't produce new basals...

Nolah, where got power, lol. It is one of those funny stuff that we learn in uni and usually have nothing to do with our lives until we decide to grow nepenthes, lol. Luckily didn't mention cytokinins as well, lol

Yup, covering the apical point or the axillary shoots won't do any good. Ampullaria vine potted at an angle and the vine allowed to bend over the pot gives a lot of basals. That is an old trick that make use of plant physiology. So we gotta thank the profs in uni for teaching us the fact but not relating a real life example to us, thus making our learning experience boring, lol.
