Nepenthes Ugly?

The idiom, "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder", holds true in this case. I am sure taking a poll here is futile as the result will be heavily skewed towards one side. Again, I came across this article while browsing CPUKforum. There is already a discussion about the newspaper's article.

What have you to say?

:veryangry: Nepenthes should be the most beautiful. Not ugly like the newspaper article is wrong wrong I disagree. All of us grow Nepenthes because it mystery beautiful. There is no plants if ugly.

Whoever wrote that article is not in his/her right mind. Nepenthes are so pretty and unique.

What they listed neps under the top 10 ugliest polants in the world?

As far as i know, whoever see nepenthes for the first time, they'll get amazed of it's uniqueness and beauty but i didn't know there were people who think its ugly.

Its sad though judging these plants without knowing them.:(

I dont get it. In my opinion there are lots of uglier plants. Just think of all those vegetable plants (carrots, broccoli, colliflower, zuchinni,...) these are usefull plants but they are butt ugly. Other weeds are also plain, boring and ugly such as a nettle. Strange article which was probably written by some journalist with no real plant knowledge.

ever seen carrots flower ? large compound white flowers. Also brings in hoverflies, a useful predator in gardens.
Really there are no ugly plants expected maybe some of the more bizarre plants breed by man.

What does RHS mean? Royal Horticultural Soceity? I don't know. However I agree with the guys that says beauty is in the eye of beholder... I for example sometimes do not like some of the shapes of pitchers of some of the nep species. But hey I don't go dissing those species.

I however do not appreciate RHS' labelling plants as ugly, why? what for?

Re: Nepenthes Ugly?

Arvin, This is a very localised opinion only. Maybe people in UK are not so exposed to plants like us in the tropics. Remember we can have plants and flowers from all the world over- comes to us in refrigerated containers in planes. So most people will have to content with the usual seasonal flowers like roses, freesias and tulips.

However not so the reverse, as many tropical flowers are not exported to temperated climate countries as they don't last very long some, like hibiscus, are a matter of daily bloom though some like ginger flower and Gerbera do ge exported.

Maybe we should request for a bigger sample and not lable plants as ugly but unusual or unique. Finally, opinion comes with exposure through travelling and reading. It is our duty to inform then convince those poor non-nepenthes connoisseurs that unusual plants are pretty too- in their own unique way.

I stand to be corrected for what I mentioned above.

I saw the truncata pitcher and thought ... "wow what a nice pitcher" ... so I'm still astonished about this article and neps under the top10 of ugly plants. I think this guy who wrote this got offended by the sexual symbolism which is involved in the pitchers. Some people are just afraid of sexuality.

Boris, think you might be right or people are simply inexposed. They're more used to the usual type of flowers like gerberas. roses, carnations and plants likeivy, tomatoes. People just don't know how to handle unusual things so they just place it on their "I don't like list" in so categorise as ugly. my two cents worth.

I think its a bit weird considering that Borneo Exotics has already won gold medals at the Chelsea flower show (the most prestigious flower show in the UK). You can read an article about it here : http://sundaytimes.lk/070603/Plus/pls15.html
Strange that the RHS gives gold medals to exhibits with the top 10 ugliest plants.
