My Northiana

Hi guys, from now on I'll be updating on my little northiana as it grows up. These photos was taken about two weeks ago. Plant now has put up more than one inch tall pitchers. Red spotting also formed inside the pitcher.

The pitcher before was quite small. I am surprised at the pitcher increase. Thought northiana was suppose to be a slow grower *biggrin2*

once the conditions were right, their roots well established their growth will be fast.

Re: My Northiana

Very nice... Seems to like what you're doing now.. :) I do find that northiana can become a bit unstable when it grows larger as the stem is not really very strong. They balance themselves by the pitchers which rest on the ground..

What media you use? I seen, burn soil, charcoal, and some stone there

Looks great :) Hope it'll keep growing well for you

Re: My Northiana

Burnt soil, peat moss, charcoal, tree bark and limestone. Also, at the bottom of the pot is a 4 inch layer of pebbles and some limestone. Orginally I was thinking that this was the best mimic of northiana's environment. Turns out it actually helps in draining alot. I hose my northiana until it becomes waterlogged (because my burnt earth wasn't filtered, hence the terrible drainage ) and it took a minute to drain off. Yet the plant didn't complain and seemed to like being hosed.

Also, I'm guessing that the pticher becomes bigger on a harder surface eg. the charcoal bits. Just something I noticed, but this claim might nor be true. When it's time to repot it, I'll see how extensive the root is  thanks everyone!

A quick update:-

Attachment 4747

For the past two months, I've exposed my northiana to full sunlight from 3-5pm. Seems to have set back the plant, smaller leaves, smaller pitchers and slower growth. Also, an inflating pitcher just blacked off. Now in my new shade house, hopefully it will bounce back

Re: My Northiana

Nice! Don't think I'm ready for Northiana. My N. x Syurga has a lot of resemblance in leaf/pitcher shape and color(red speckles within pitcher). Though difficulties level has been reduced with ventricosa in the hybrid.

paphioboy 8th June 2011 09:06 PM

Re: My Northiana

alpiner, northiana is pretty easy, just slow. And likes drier media than most neps. I find it easier to grow than intermediate/highland species like sanguinea and (edwardsiana x burbidgeae)..

kevyn chan 9th June 2011 11:41 AM

Re: My Northiana

n. syurga (ventricosa x northiana) is more robust than any of its parent however it has the looks and trait more to ventricosa than northiana (except the red spots in the pitchers)

northiana hybrids or anything to do with northiana is proven 'slow'. ventricosa hybrids based on my small number of collection proved that when it is crossed with other species (lowland, intermediate, highland) it tends to be more robust than its own or other difficult species.

my 'tc'ed northianas are very very slow in terms of growth and response to changes in environment. they are very pale too!! really need some tips from those who has succeed in keeping this species.

alpiner 9th June 2011 03:31 PM

Re: My Northiana

I've not seen the grown pitcher of syurga. At least the young one looks quite similar. I guess you are right in terms of pitcher shape are closer to ventricosa. Leaf shape is quite similar to Ed's northiana. This is mine photo taken last month, start to develop funnel shape, I think. Currently ~3inch. Quite happy with the growth rate, from ~<1inch to 3inch pitcher in ~2.5month. Comparing to same batch group purchase, N. burbidgeae x edwardsiana still hv not produced pitcher.

Re: My Northiana

very nice grown for the n. syurga while n. burbigaea x edwardsiana is another story, it has to be grown with highland condition and media or else it will never pitcher and rot.

Re: My Northiana

How is everyone quantifying growth speed? Is it leaf count or size gain?
Usually, I track new leaf growth from main stem. With this method, I find northiana is among fast growing species. About 1 new leaf every 11-15 days. Seldom pitcher though. Among plants I have, only slower than gracilis, hirsuta, and viking.

edwardyeeks 10th June 2011 01:07 PM

Re: My Northiana

Northiana produces leaves quite fast. But it increases in size very very slowly. If you have enough humidity, northiana will almost always pitcher, but slowly. Sometimes, the tendril can take up to 2 months to settle down and start inflating the pitcher.

Re: My Northiana

Is that ventricosa x northiana? N. syurga? It definitely looks like ventricosa dominates the genes in this hybrid. Only the colouration and the pitcher shape seems to be northiana influenced.

mine that i grow since 2006, but it was seed grown. It now has pitchers on every leaves. It has produced a ground off shoot which i cut and grow separately. The last time i allowed it to grow ( 2nd photo) it has no negative effect on the main vine ( 3rd photo )

Good growing both of you. Robert, how much light and duration did you expose to your northiana? Did you spray often?

Gorgeous northiana, robert... :D Mine needs another 5 years to get to that stage. lol

Robert 19th August 2011 03:46 PM

Re: My Northiana

Jimmy, i grow it in open garden and it gets natural sunlight and rain. I water spray lightly on every plant everyday unless it rains. They are under 60% single layer nursery shade.

casey, once the conditions was right and it produces healthy leaves, pitchers will follow soon.

paphio,it depends on your local conditions.some tend to grow faster.

Is the length of sun exposure affects its performance? Mine receive around 6 hour only....

on average 6-8 hrs was sufficient. plant without light would not be healthy.

Robert, that is stunning! What do you think of my northiana? I am wondering whether it actually is increasing in size or not compared to the past few months. Is this the normal rate of growth of this plant or mine is like super super slow?

Re: My Northiana

Wow, wow, wow...... Robert, that's a beauty. The one you're holding is growing on the ground? Are those growing in the pot producing the same stunning big pitchers? I'm wondering if the cool roots affect the pitcher size assuming temperature under the ground is cooler campared to media in the pot.

Robert 20th August 2011 03:23 PM

Re: My Northiana

edward, it's doing very well from the first photo to the present. The leaves and pitcher have increased in size. Northiana's growth is slow.

TS, it was from the same pot. The larger pitcher was from the main vine.

Very nice looking. Leaf texture is good also.
Mine has been growing steadily over past half a year. Still a long way before getting such attractive pitchers.

My latest northiana pitcher showing the increase in size. Its the tallest pitcher I had to date as you can see compared with my finger. Usually, the next 2-3 pitchers that form after this are smaller, then a larger one inflates. The peristome is also slightly thicker, though it is impossible to see in this picture.

Been a while, so I'll post an update on my northiana. Latest pitcher to pop open, the peristome hasn't really folded back so you can't see it. Nothing much impressive, only some size increase in the pitcher. This is one slooooooow grower :spinning:
