Actually some scientist actually DRANK the CONTENTS of the pitcher my book says.Alfred Wallace(18233-1913) said:"WE found it very palatable, though rather warm, and WE all QUENCHED our thirst from these natural jugs"O.o And another guy from NatGeo mag said:"It tasted NICE though rather warm"And he didn't like the squishy bit in the bottom.Warm?

I even tried the nectar at the peristome of the N. mirabilis, tasted like honey... sweet *biggrin2*

Of coz I won't drink from a pitcher full of dead insects... Mainly the ones that's not open and contain fluids in it. *biggrin2*

In any field trips take note of small forming pitchers, full size pitchers before the lids unfurl, recent opened pitchers and old pitchers.

pitchers fully formed but lids unopen- fluids are clean, fresh which can be taken
recently opened-usually will contain small ants and insects.
old pitchers- smell will be very fishy and pungent ( esp big traps -bical,raff, northiana, lowii, rajah)

I read somewhere orang asli use the fluid to heal their eye infections though i rather use an Eye Mo than cuttingmy pitchers;)

Re: taste test!!!hehehehehe

One interesting fact is the unopened pitcher fluid is probably the only source of sterile H20 when you're in the field.

well obviously i did...and i think it would be cool to investigate what other unknown properties are plants hold, another cure maybe? or the usual cure your cold, may induce inflamed stomach vomiting diarrhea etc..Plant medicine would be a great course to take in college,so many options

besides the pitcher's fluid other part of the plant also serve special purpose. Locals use the roots of N.mirabilis - crush to obtain the juice to cure ailment.

Local tribes in Borneo use the long vines of ampullaria for fastening wooden farm houses, wooden and bamboo ladders, etc.

the outer skins are peel off and kept for their usage.

Whoa, Marvin, Alfred Wallace was not just "some scientist," but the co-discoverer of evolution (along with Darwin). He spent many years in the jungles of the Malay Archipelago (and in the Amazon before that), and a letter he sent to Darwin included an article that he asked Darwin to review, which contained the first known written description of evolution (the idea of which came to him during delirium caused by malaria), prompting Darwin to write his famous book, On the Origin of Species. Darwin is remembered, but unfortunately Wallace is largely forgotten, even though he lived a much more exciting life.
