Well my dad also likes to collect plants. Got all kinds of plants, from white lotus to succulents and orchids to palms and vines. My house has lots and lots of sansieviera. I got the book for so cheap because I have discount and the price without discount is already very low.

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!

Hi everyone

Anyways i noticed something on the ferns that grow on LFS instead of normal potting compost....

1.The ferns are much bigger on the pot which has potting soil in it probally due to the amount of nutreints on it.

2.Ferns on normal potting compoest has a much develop rooting system which crawls around everywhere grasping to anything it can therefore making it very difficult to pull the whole plant out while those in pure LFS can easily be pulled out and has very small rooting system.

I pulled out on of them and chucked it in my minibog...Well since i didn't wanna waste it haha....

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!

Gee, I used to love having ferns everywhere, that's until they started to infest all my gemination pots!

Now I have varieties of ferns growing among my drosera & sarracenia seedling and sometimes even overcoming the pots hence kiliing most of my seedlings! I can't possibly pull them out most of the times, afraid I'd damage my plantlets roots, so I usually pinch + cut them off!

I let them grow in moderation with my neps. though :)

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!

Hi Athene

Well i normally just let them grow wild but they stay in a very small size though not counting some exceptions.....People actually told me that ferns are good for seedlings....Because they provide a little shade and water which are held on the leaves of the ferns provide more humidity...But of course too much of everything isn't good.

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!

Ken, have you ever had them overpower your pot?

When you said you normally let them grow wild & they don't grow too big, how long a duration is that?

What type of fern are you talking about? Any photo?

Hi Athene......

Never really overpower the pot.....None of them grew really big.....After awhile growth from them will just stop.I don't have a clear shot but as you can see in this plant theres a fern somewhere in the pot....I have another one 2 but its not in pics.

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!

I always pull out ferns. Not because of side effect to plants but because my plants look untidy with ferns.

Re: Ferns!

I lost plants to ferns, mainly a very vigour scrambling fern which can reach 1m in height (growing in seedling tray of 12cm x 12cm.) It completely fills any pot it in even if the potting medium is LFS.
I got into the happen of removing any fern in their 'Slime mould' stage when are in any of my seed punnets. With larger CP I will wait until I know what type of fern it is and then decide it fate.
Is there a fern society in Malaysia? If so contact them and they might be able to help with the ID. This is what I did.

Re: Ferns!

Ferns especially large ones will overwhelm your pot. Their leaves will shade light your intended growing plants hence inhibiting them from photosynthesising. Even those smaller ones have the ability to stun or kill as their extensive root system might choke plant's rooting system or even compete for nutrients and water.

To answer Khaos question about identifying fern. Ken, snap a couple of photos and post them here. Whenever Shawn has the time to grace this forum (he is up to his neck these days), he might be identify the ferns.
