wow...what a lil jewel!! i think you should cut back on the moss and provide more airier mix but still maintain high humidity and lots of sun....learnt from sifu nepnut and now my truncata is producing new pitcher and new leave.

Re: Truncata black from BE

Your plant look healthy given the current hot and dry weather.

Be prepared to spend 1-2 yrs as truncata is very very slow growing during seedling stage. I got a MT clone which I got almost 1.5 yrs ago similar size to your current BE black truncata, now it's about 5"-6" diameter only... sigh

is this the king of spade and heart of queen that are being the hottest selling plant few months back? is it a form of hybrid or purebreed?

Aliamyz 23rd March 2010 06:33 PM

Re: Truncata black from BE

It is a pure breed Soo.

Ali....Their not even sure if it is a species or hybrid but they put it under truncata i guess cos of some similar features...

(I could be wrong)

I still don't think its a pure species though :crying:

Re: Truncata black from BE

Possibly a hybrid...the peristome looks quite like veitchii's, but otherwise, the two truncatas are extremely amazing plants.

Hopefully BE or somebody can come up with a more detailed explanation about these two plants.

see it reminds me of a N. Ovata

Ed, the wild population is gone now...so i don't think it'll be able to be IDed

Re: Truncata black from BE

It is NOT a hybrid at all, BOTH parent plants are pure species N. truncata, therefore all of these seedlings are also pure species, N. truncata. They are, however, from known individual parent plants, each one unique, but still a pure species; it so happens that they are of a very small population, (which may no longer exist in its natural habitat), that exhibit these extreme dark colors and wide peristome features. - Rich

Hi Melson,
Very healthy seedling you got there, did you grow it in an intermediate condition (with cool night)??

melson 26th March 2010 07:55 AM

Re: Truncata black from BE

Thank you guys.
Yes, I grow it in an intermediate condition with cool night this winter.
But the summer in Taiwan will be lowland condition (temperature up to 28℃ ~34℃).I begining to worry about that.

NepNut 26th March 2010 11:10 AM

Re: Truncata black from BE

Hi Melson,
Thanks for sharing this information. Looks like these seedling do better in intermediate condition rather than LL. At least in Taiwan it's seasonal, not like here in Malaysia, hot, hot and hot... *biggrin2*

The colouration looks better and and the plant looks healthier. When the prices for the plant drop, I'll get it *biggrin2*

I won't buy BE's new released hybrids anymore because a lot of their hybrids turn out to be not the real thing, for instance sibuyanensis x hamata turned out to be sibuyanensis x (xLady pauline) and many more of the newer hybrids is suspected too.Latest is ampullaria x talangensis:unsure:

I rather wait for a few years where the hybrids grow and get confirmed and the prices go down too.

kentosaurs 3rd April 2010 11:18 PM

Re: Truncata black from BE

Ali where did u find out that BE's sibu x hamata is sibu x lady pauline????? It probably is a right parentage...Its just that hamata's teeth has quite little influence in hybrids..Just like bical

Hey, guys,

The temperature is 34℃ at day and 30℃ at night in TAIWAN. It's really hot summer here. But......seedlings grow better and faster as following I show. (Look at them...)

I dont think there is stock left for the truncata black marvin. Even if there is its gonna be very expensive. Probably 200++ For a S sized plant
