Supposedly Sphagnum Peat Moss

4 Attachment(s)
I am so upset! I bought a huge packet of sphagnum peat moss from Ace Hardware store at RM38.90. Opened it today to pot my Drosera and found that it is not sphagnum peat moss at all.

I think it is very irresponsible of the company who produce this product. They declare on the packaging that it is PREMIER sphagnum peat moss but the product turned out to be something else. They think customers like us won't know? The packaging says it's a Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss but the company is a US company. Some more put the name Canadian Sphagnum Peat moss knowing that Canadian sphagnum moss and sphagnum peat is one of the best.

Just look at the close up picture. It's just twigs and detritus mix with peat. Not sure the peat is sphagnum peat or not but it looks like just normal peat to me. Some companies just needs to be shut down! Wasted my money and time! :veryangry:

It's definately not 100% pure peat, the packaging is misleading. Should make a complaint to Ace Hardware, they might not even aware of this either. Thanks for the warning David.

I'll defitnally complain when I visit Ace again, maybe this weekend.

They're smart concealing the contents of the package so you would nto be able to see exactly what's inside until you buy it and open it. Those pieces of stuff you see in the picture besides the twigs looks like plant roots to me whe I examine it closely. I thought earlier it was peat as peat tend to clump into pieces like that when compress.

I defitnally can't use this stuff because fungus and mold will grow on the non sphagnum peat material under my terrarium and grow chamber. As you guys know pure sphagnum and sphagnum peat has a anticeptic effect to prevent fungus and mold growth.

Hi....I bought peat many months back from the jusco home depot in 1U..I always get those low quality stuff from there cos its cheap..So far all my CPs are still doing okay...Anyways the peat i bought has sometimes a small twig or sooo...Very little...Most of the bigger parts are just peat which are compressed and stick together..

I believe that it is the bad packaging and labeling that makes buyers confused. Premier is a member company under the Canadian Peat Moss Association. Canadian peat moss are partially decomposed peat bog that is harvested from sites in Canada (in the case of Premier, from Alberta,Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, and New Brunswick), hence it is possible to get other bog stuff in it. The processing involves milling in situ and then transported for packing, the minimal milling may account for the obvious other organic matter. The bogs harvested are then reclaimed back to bog or berry planting ground or forest. So peat moss can be tricky to get a good lot, unless the user then sieves and size it themselves. I believe some brands further sieve and grade them before selling them, hence a higher cost per pack, as opposed to the large compressed bales of bog peat from Premier.

Re: Supposedly Sphagnum Peat Moss

In this case they should not say it is Sphagnum Peat Moss. If the packing just say Peat Moss, then I have not right to be angry. But once they use the word "Sphagnum", the contents must only be "Sphagnum" Peat Moss and nothing else. If they are part of the Canadian Peat Moss Association, they should know this. Therefore this confirms to me that they aim to deceive with their packaging.

This is so disappointing and unethical of them.
Btw those clumps you found are pine bark. Half deteriorated material. I've used those for my reptile bedding before and they are supposed to look brown in fresh form. This looks like they collected used ones and threw it in for added bulk. And pine bark does not naturally come in pieces like this. I dare not imagine others buying the largest sized pack, that is like overkill!!

So where do you guys commonly get sphagnum peat from?

Wait, isn't the sphagnum peat in the website( the second one) given by poweramps same as the one David bought?

Re: Supposedly Sphagnum Peat Moss

David, you should definitely complain to Ace; they like to sell import stuff and never bother to think if the labels are understood or not since it is usually vague and in a foreign language.

Marvin,

Usually I get my sphagnum peat moss from Ace Hardware store packed under a Singapore company. Just that this time around I saw this new brand and wanted to try.

poweramps,

I've already complained to Ace customer service personel. Not sure if they will do anything about it. Will see if they still offer it in their shop.

just saw this post - after buying a pack of the same sphagnum peat moss. i've taken photos to compare tourbe's with the s'pore brand. i did find a few twigs but not very many - about 4 one-inch ones when i took out about a kilo's worth of the peat moss.

need your advice, david. can i go ahead and use this cos the quality looks almost similar to the s'pore brand - just drier and a few odd twigs that can be removed.

s'pore brand:

this is what the peat moss is like in my tourbe packet:

i came across a few of these twigs but not very many so far:

Re: Supposedly Sphagnum Peat Moss

Well, my packet definally had more twigs as compared to the pack you bought. Besides the twigs, can we be sure the rest of the stuff is sphagnum peat?

Re: Supposedly Sphagnum Peat Moss

thanks for the response, david. i'll use it in the garden and try some on my spare dros like brumanii and spats. then wait and see what effect it has on them.

Re: Supposedly Sphagnum Peat Moss

Besides the twigs, if you look closely at the media you will find peat mixed together with sphagnum peat.

I figure Neps will do fine unless they have already mix fertilier in the media. If it is still poor in nutrients, I think some drosera might do well too. But if you are using this media to grow your CPs in a terrarium or grow chamber indoors, fungus will grow in the media if it has normal peat in it. As you all know if it is purely sphagnum peat, fungus will not grow.
