Re: Pygmae Drosera

I used sand and peat mix 1:1. Peat is pre-soak and rinsed many times to get rid of impurities (acid and stuff). Top layer I use pure peat because I find that these sun loving fellow can get burnt if the sand gets too hot, just a thin layer.
Water using tray method only. Contrary to what many people suggest, and they rightly done so, I couldn't find deep pots so I use normal "Baba" 105 pots and they thrived..... until I got too busy and forgot to water them- yes that is why I have none left now. Be wary of algae and if possible get rid of moss (those green stuff) co-habitating in the same pot. The empty spots between plants are victims of algae. Re: Pygmae Drosera
what sand do u use and where did u get it?
Harris |
Re: Pygmae Drosera
Fine river sand. Otherwise just use sand used for plastering or even fine sea sand. Make sure you wash the sand many many times to get ride of stuff like salt, impurities.

Re: Pygmae Drosera
BA : i know of one grower in penang who pours boiling water over the sand to kill bacteria etc. *smile*
|
Re: Pygmae Drosera
Thank you for reminding me. I did that. After filling the media into pots, I pour boiling ho****er into the pots then soak till cool.

Re: Pygmae Drosera
BA, I grow all my pygmae in normal pot too, they thrived .
As to get rid of the algae/spores in the media, I use microwave oven *biggrin2*, before growing the plants of course. |

Yeah, I used to have many too:tongue:. D. scorpiodes doesn't grow well for me too. It's too hot for D. scorpiodes in our country. |
Re: Pygmae Drosera
Currently, there is few type of pgymy that dormant, but, it still under water tray, and direct sunlight.
May I know what is special treatment need to give to pgymy if they had went to dormancy for 2months+. thanks in advance |

D. scorpiodes will only like cameron... :spinning: |
Re: Pygmae Drosera
I'm going to get shot for this, but for me D. scorpiodes is quite a fuss free grower, although if it goes dormant, it only comes out alive around 50% of the time. I usually water my dormant stuff like normal, but for most around 20% don't make it, depending on species.
D. scorpiodes can take our day heat unless you leave it to get blasted by direct afternoon sun. If you have problems, try growing it as a windowsil plant. It should work, even better if you have air-con at night and/or during the day. Pygmies are winter growing and I've found they can go red with just as little as an hour or two of morning sun and indirect light/light shade during the rest of the day. |
Re: Pygmae Drosera
Ifurita, where do you grow yours plse ?
Mine is out in the garden so aircon is def out. I don`t remember mine being in direct afternoon sun as I do know pygmies tend to be a tad fussier than others, but yes, if I try again, I`ll only allow 1-2 hours of morning sun as suggested. Thank you. Time * to * go * hunting * for * some * d.scorpiodes * |
Re: Pygmae Drosera
Currently, I've moved all my pygmies to my room window(make space for more neps muahaha), so they get air-con at night, but not during the day. Still, I know for a fact that they can grow without it, although flowering and production of gemmae is another story: I've never ever had D. scorpioides flower for me before, although I've had a few rounds of gemmae.

Re: Pygmae Drosera
@ Harris, I know this is quite out of topic but I really appreciate the reply from you guys! Wow! any tropical seeds will do that will grow in our tropical country like D.tokaiensis, D.Burmannii, D. Spatulata, D. Indica, D.Capillaris, D. Venusta or etc. any available will do? :):) I'm currently starting right now on Drosera collections and quite new in CP cultivation but so far almost all of my plants were happy, that's why I continue to be hook or say Poison to the species. Just let me know if you have any available seeds, I'll just pay for the postal through paypal if you have some. Cheers, Arnel
