N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button' ;)

Pectoral wings? I like it! 2 out of 5 basals carry it so far.

Re: N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

interesting, is it just an individual plant mutation or does it happens to be a variant of it's own in the nature?
The belly looks like a sub-pitcher growing out of it:1thumbup:

Re: N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

Just one plant so far. 2 out of 5 basal pitchers have this trait, I'm hoping it comes out on more of them.

Wow Shawn, nice find. I'm surprised that you noticed it, shows that you actually inspect your collection regularly :) Considering that you have quite a collection, that is hard to do.

And the basals have this too, so it's not just a fluke, it's a trait!

Marvin, KKC is a short form for a three letter word chinese word of unknown origin used to describe the male reproductive part of a human. *biggrin2*

Re: N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

Well, it turns out not to be a 'one-off' thing. Multiple plants are now showing this strange trait and at least one has started to develop a third wing!

Evolution in action! If this button can help to trap more preys, may be more N. gracilis will look like this in the future. If this trait can be found in the wild.

Re: N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

is it possible to be a single plant mutation that turns out to be a step of evolution?

piscesilim 24th February 2010 01:17 AM

Re: N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

May be. More offspring of this N. gracilis will have this trait if this trait is dominant.

Re: N. gracilis var. 'Belli-Button'

Well, it is MORE than one plant already but I would almost bet that it is from weirdness caused by TC. Anyone in Penang can check with Eric (Monkeycup) and see if his plants have this as well...and/or if he remembers whether or not these plants were from TC.
