Re: Just some of my tills
David, you got a very bright sunlit balcony there! Your tills are in very healthy condition without sunburn. I wish I can grow tills like that as it looks like just the right light exposure for them.
I would like to guess the unIDed tills. 1 T. capitata x xerographica 4 T.bulbosa x butzii 9 T.araujei 14 T.balbisiana x (?) I have one of that too. It looks quite sturdy and sun resistant. Your xero looks unique, like a pineapple crown. *biggrin2* |
Re: Just some of my tills
Thank you cendric for your kind comments.
funkychips, Thanks. I still feel they are not at optimum condition. They grow very slowly for me. Other growers like Jonathan have plants that grow much faster than mine and looks more robust. I think it's because it is grown indoors and sometimes I feel they lack sunlight. Actually I do not have a balcony. They are all hung/placed indoors at the window in my living hall and the window receives sunlight from about 3.40pm to 6.40pm. However, nowadays the weather have the tendency to rain at that time when the sunlight shines in. It's frustrating and I am thinking of placing a metal halide on the ceiling for them and my other plants there. Thanks for helping me ID them. Been wanting to know what they are for a while now. Haa, haa... the xerographica looks like a pineapple crown because when I first started to grow them about 1 year + back, I was very afraid I would over water them and they would rot on me. I was also worried about the lack of sunlight. So I starve them of water... just a little... Heh, heh... to be safe. So you can see the old leaves are curled up. But recently in the last few months the sun shift and is shining bright at them. So I fertilise them and water much more. So new leaves are longer and wider and does not curl. |
Re: Just some of my tills
By the way, would any other Till collector know what third last picture is (or picture 14)? I would like to know what it is. ZFunkychips said that it is a balbisiana hybrid. That's the problem with nurseries in Malaysia. They never tag their plants.

Re: Just some of my tills
David,
the ID for your plants are: #1.....capitata Maya ot hybrid of capitata X xero. Only the infl will tell as both plants looks very similiar. #4......bulbosa. elongated leaves! #9......araujei. Wow! very green. #14....balbisiana. Very large! They all look very healthy. You can put your xero at sunnier place. Don't worry. The plants will adapt. |
Re: Just some of my tills
Thanks Andy for confirming the names of the plants. I'll seriously think about placing a metal halide for them as I cannot control the sunlight that comes in the window. Then I can also start to grow my neps there too... haa, haaa...

Re: Just some of my tills
Thanks Andy. You're the Tills master! :)

Re: Just some of my tills
David, I find that a very easy till to grow. They seem to love sun (they will put on a pinkish hue close to the leaf base) and don't mind being in rain or heavy watering. After a while you may find the plant having a strange leaf formation like a dish drier's criss-cross design.

Re: Just some of my tills
Thanks for the info funkychips. I recently installed a 500 watts metal halide plant light at the ceiling above my plants. Will see if that does the trick. I've placed all the sun loving Tills under the lighting.
The lighting is super bright I tell you. Kinda like having a super nova in the house. So I decided to put it on timer from 10am to 1pm so that when I get back from work at night, the house is cooler and it does not seem like I have aliens in my house (because of the bright lights). On the first day I tried out, the timer did not work properly and the light was still on when I got home at night. When I got home, from the parking when I look up it looks like my apartment block is a lighthouse. I can see a beam of light coming out through the window of my apartment. Hope my neighbours from another block do not think that aliens have landed in my apartment. I had a shock when I got into the house. My entire living hall was swarmed with insects because of the lights. But it's good ina sense as my Drosera had their filled that night. Caught as many insects as I could and feed them to my CPs. |
Re: Just some of my tills
Remember to show us your fat plump CPs after few feeding then.:2thumbup::biggrin:
I'm sure your xero will thank you for that. Any signs of leafburn in your initial installation? |
Re: Just some of my tills
Hi Andy,
At the moment no leafburn. I was so worried on the first day as the timer did not work properly and the light was on for about 10 hours. I hope the effects of leafburn is not delayed. Hope the leaves won't show burn marks in the next few days. I am having the light on for 3 hours now and see how. Will slowly increase the duration or hours. |
Re: Just some of my tills
Hi David,
Yes, metal halides are like spotlight lamps, very warm if run on the standard 6-8 hour daily basis. But they work wonders for indoor plants. Maybe installing a standalone fan also attached to the timer would help prevent the heat from stagnating. Killing two birds with one stone: Insect attractant and light provider. Do keep us updated on your alien wonderland *biggrin2* |
Re: Just some of my tills
At the moment I switch on my ceiling fan when I go to work. I think I will only switch on the lights for a maximum of 3 hours. Maybe 4 maximum. Don want the house to heat up too much and I have ellectricity bill to worry about.

Re: Just some of my tills
Metal halide light source is next to sunlight. We actually can get suntan from it. So be careful with the UV rays especially when there are ppl around in the house.
Leaf burn is immediate if the plant get burned. You can see totally bleached or brown patches on the leaves within a day or two. If not , then the plant is safe within its' tolerance range. David, I don't want to unable to recognize you after a year or two*biggrin2**biggrin2**biggrin2* |
