Nep Pollen Collection

Hi everyone,
I always recieved questions regarding when and how to collect nep pollen. So I think it'll be beneficial to those that wanted to learn to see some pic illustrations, pics worth a thousand words... *biggrin2*

These 2 pics illustrate which pollen buds are ready and which aren't, please take a good look

Sorry, typo "power = Powder" :shy:

To collect the pollen, u just need to trim off pollen bud/head

Collected pollen buds is store in a folded paper pocket. The paper used in this case is wax paper (ie. burger wraper). I found the pollen won't stick to the wax paper so it's easier to remove it when need to use it for pollination. Wax paper will also protect the stored pollen from moisture.

Always label the name and record the date so you won't get confuse :spinning:

After pollen were collected and store in the paper pocket, I will usually let it air dry for 1-2 days (if not dry properly, the pollen will easily get fungus) before I store the whole packet in the fridge (lower compartment, not the freezer). I will use a clear PP plastic box (those used to food storage) to store the packet.

Hope this help . I will be posting "Nep Pollination" thread soon... Thanks for viewing.

thanks a lot, very useful as my male campa flower is opening(slower than having a snail to slug through 100m), hopefully can collect some this time :)

is there any substitute for the wax paper?
what about air dry, how is it carried out?

Thanks a lot :)

I guess you can use regular paper, I prefer wax paper because it's easier to scrape off the pollen powder (won't stick to the wax surface) and it can protect the stored pollen better against moisture.

To air dry the collected pollen before you store it in the fridge, just keep it in a cool and dry place to ensure all the moisture evaporated before you seal the packet. Make sure the packet is open to enable the mositure to evaporate fully.
