Live Sphagnum Moss

1 Attachment(s)
I found a few strands of reviving sphagnum moss in a nep pot, at least look like. They are bright green. Much bigger than regular moss and branching on its main stem... so I guess it must have sprouted from spores among the dead LFS.

This is the only pot I see this. Probably because it is one that is heavily shaded. I am wondering whether it makes sense to try growing the moss. Heard that it is hard growing at lowland condition.

Any special care needed? How is the growth rate of sphagnum moss? Like from the few strands to 5cm x 5cm patch?

I've found Sphagnum to be quite easy to grow in lowland conditions: It'll grow even if only given bright shade(some sun is better though) and air humidity can be quite low as long as humidity directly around/next to the plant is high.

Since your moss' growing points are small and its only reviving(not mature yet) right now, you may want to give it extra TLC. Keep humidity high(can use cover) and conditions around the moss wet. Too wet is better than too dry; I've found sphagnum to grow happily even when underwater(abt 1-2cm deep) so you don't need to worry about it drowning. For light, bright is good, but not direct sun.

Do NOT keep air humidity high combined with low light conditions. The sphagnum will grow very quickly, but thin and stringy. Its not healthy and will die easily.

Note that there are a couple of different strains/species in cultivation by CP growers in Malaysia and Singapore and some might grow better in lowland conditions than others. The stuff I'm growing may be one of those and that's why I find it easy.

how i propagate sphagnum moss.

I keep it moist and placed them in plastic bag, placed under the nursery shade among other potted plants. I didnt bother or look at them for many week.

Robert, I never thought that way also can propagate LSM...

Did you make some hole in the plastic beg?

Re: Live Sphagnum Moss

It's possible to grow LSM in outdoor LL tropical climate without any special treatment. Just make sure you give it enough sunlight, minimum 50% shade. It's possible to grow in full sun as long as you make sure it didn't dry out.
