BETTA

Hi guys.....After seeing some older threads i realise that some of you have fish experience as much as you have with CPs..So i wanna ask some Q's about fighting fishes...

1.Do they need filters/running water or air pump to live??? Or are the fine in still water?

2.How much light do they actually need??? I was thinking maybe a small tank outside in my balcony (in a more shaded area) receiving sunlight instead of artificial lights...Are they fine with that?

3.Any forums which might be good????

4.How much do normal bettas in aquarium shop worth??? Cos i scared if its very cheap and they sell to me at a high price...

5. Anywhere in KL/Kepong can get healthy betta??

Just for info i have guppies and tetras and mollies under my care now..

I am refering to the common beta fish. Betta splendens. They do not need filter or air pump. Although, filter may be a good thing. They can do without air pump as well.

They belong to a group of fish in the Anabantidae, which means they can breath from air. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabantidae

For more info, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betta_splendens

The normal betta splendens build bubble nest when they are ready for mating. Quite interesting actually to watch them.

They do not need light as they do not do photosynthesis.

Just a couple of ringgit for normal ones. Nicer/fancy ones is RMxx. Nicer/rarer ones is RMxxx. There are wild bettas, I think our local expert is piscesilim.

You into fish as well now? I can only answer you basic stuffs regarding this fish as I am outdated by the newer strains/traits. I use to keep/breed a lot of them a long time ago(when I was schooling actually). The newer strains as well as the wild ones are nice.

Hope this is of help to you. ;-)

Re: BETTA

CJ has said it all.

1.Do they need filters/running water or air pump to live??? Or are the fine in still water?
Still water in a jar is enough. Slightly acidic. Water change depends on the type of betta you keep. Halfmoon at almost two daily (or long tail ones where else plakat (short tail) not so sensitive.

2.How much light do they actually need??? I was thinking maybe a small tank outside in my balcony (in a more shaded area) receiving sunlight instead of artificial lights...Are they fine with that?
That is enough usually

3.Any forums which might be good????
Betta Society Malaysia is good. I think one of the members has a stall at amcorp mall on Sundays. Check it out. You can get fish and advise too.

4.How much do normal bettas in aquarium shop worth??? Cos i scared if its very cheap and they sell to me at a high price...
Try cheap easy maintain ones first. Check out betta society and the shop in amcorp. Yes Piscesilim is THE EXPERT here. Try him.

5. Anywhere in KL/Kepong can get healthy betta??
Refer to members in Betta Society. They also have betta Sundays on first sunday of month, where they meet up to compare notes and display they pets. They sell too. Refer to them.

Just for info i have guppies and tetras and mollies under my care now...
If you're interested in betta spendens, they like to be to be alone.
