Nepenthes Rajah

Hi all

Just saw many post regarding this nepenthes and that various members got these a year + ago. Just want to find out on how the plant is doing for you now? Do you have to have a terrarium to keep these in our climate?

Any good news out there? Any success story?

Mine was outdoor. My dad forced me to transplant it 3 time and shifted the plant here and there a lot of times.

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

A baby rajah(BE's S size) can survive in very lowland conditions(30+C) for a year or two before finally dying off. However, the plant will be fine if things cool down a bit at night. I think rajah can actually grow for you in lowland if your growing area has a regular drop down to at least 24-26C at night. The problem is that its a light loving species and it won't pitcher if the area isn't bright enough. Another problem is that its a fussy plant and utterly hates being transplanted. I had one growing at my window till it had leaves the size of my palm but had itchy fingers and transplanted it...and it was gone.

My current rajah is still small, but is healthy and pitchering. It grows at my window with normal day temps and air-con(~22-24C) at night. You don't need a terrarium for it...if you're going to take all the trouble setting up a terrarium, you might as well grow a hamata :P

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

For me, I will not go for Rajah. Since it is H/L plant. The plant that I may consider is nepenthes merrilliana. Because it is L/L. And it have 2nd largest pitcher, after Rajah.

I STILL WANT AN XL RAJAH!!!! lol

I know where to get one. Now, I'm waiting for my dad to confirm and for the seller's plant to produce at least 1 pitcher.

Thanks for the info. BTW. Any latest photo to show. Frankly, to date, I have not able to see a good specimen in our lowland conditions. That's why I post this thread. Ya man, hamata would be ultimate. Or wait... Villosa... (I am dreaming...)

right now i have nepenthes villosa, diatas, and rajah growing in the same pot, and they r thriving by the cool window in my room. actually everything is doing great, but bical and mirabilis var. echinostoma r naturally having troubles...grunt. The trio in the pot r farely small, but very vigorous. i am relieved lol oh yeah, and there is also a 1 yr old capensis to the right of villosa, and it seems to be just fine

diatas and its unopened pitcher

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

Vin,

Wanna remind you though that rajah ahs a very big root system and by time passes you will have difficulty repotting the plants or they won't grow properly.

Just an advice;)

Vincent 24th December 2009 09:37 PM

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

i had to pair up some plants, due to room and not enough soil at the time, but i bought a lot of medium and gonna start repotting after i get another light and table ;)

Cute xD I dunno why but I like small and slow neps xD

Vincent 25th December 2009 04:22 PM

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

rewarding in the end for a serious grower, but thats why we can make hybrids...to make them more 'vicious looking' and vigorous at the same time; Like mixing villosa and sanguinea or hamata and ventricosa.

That sure cost a bomb!!! :spinning:

For me, I will not try those H/L plants. Since, there is H/L nepenthes at my house that didnt produce or just produce small size pitcher. :sweating:

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

Hi CJ....Sorry...have not been looking at this thread...Anyway ummm it wasn't pitchering in it but definitly growing...So i found out it was humidity and so i put it outside instead cos i "close down" the box...And it pitcher with tiny pitchers but slowly got smaller and soon enough died

marvin1997 25th December 2009 10:06 PM

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

So vincent..how you grow your H/L neps?

Vincent 25th December 2009 10:07 PM

Re: Nepenthes Rajah

they grow in a west facing windowsill,so at this time of year it gets especially cold by the window, all of them like it except 'red flush' bicalcaratas and mirabilis var.echinostoma. I water them every 3-5 days, pots are on a wire mesh atop water trays, so excess water pools and then become humididty when i cant treat them to the atomizer. i have a lighting system as well that is running from 6 am to 10 pm. Last, i grow my highland plants with my lowland plants. As time has passed since i got these plants in august, they have adapted to the environment i have given them, except for 3 plants, which will take longer. they are going to town
