Not sure. However, in that particular location, there was only a bunch of them in one particular spot. The rest are green and red. Perhaps other locations might have some more.

Perhaps it's just a few odd plants.

CPNut - did you happen to check inside the pitcher? The normally white cells are a 'bait' that the plant produces and which are easily detached by termites particularly. At the point that the termites have eaten off all the 'white' there are probably more than enough termites fallen to their death inside the pitcher. Any more and the pitcher can't digest them all in time and the pitcher/contents putrefy. I'm only guessing here, but could the plant have been out in the sun and when the white cells that normally cover that area were removed, it got a 'sunburn'? I'm up for anybody elses' explaination/guesses too!

This is odd. But I can see that the white hairs are all gone. Simon, does the other pitchers on the same plant have this same black colour?

I found another plant nearby which have the same thing happend to it's pitcher. The new pitcher is normal like any red albo, the plants also look normal, just these older pitchers... I have seen pitchers where the white band is partly gone just like old paint falling off from the wall and there's no sign of this balck marking. The plant is not exposed to direct sunlight, it's was slightly under shade in the forest canopy as far as I can tell from the rainy weather that day.

From most of my observation, the main "diet" for the albo there are black ants (up to 3cm) and some winged insects. Never saw any termites in the picther before. I'm guessing it might be somekind of fungus that grow on where the white band suppose to be?? I'll keep my eyes open for the same "phenomenon" my next trip there, maybe go back to check on the same picther... this is by far the 1st time ever I saw this. I actually thought it's very cool to have a black band instead of white, would be great if can replicate what had happend there...

Went to visit some albos again last weekend, got some pics to share, hope you'll enjoy :smile:

albo pitcher with black band again... I saw a few this phenomenon on some older pitchers. Still a mystery what caused it though :confused:.
