My first orchid

I'm slowly branching out into different kinds of plants. Today I thought my lithops were lost on the mail, so I consoled myself by buying my first orchid. (And then the lithops turned up anyway!)

It's an angraecum didieri. It smells wonderful!

Take good care of this jewel. It was exhibited in the recent show. The flower is the size of a man's palm. Heard it originated from Madagascar.

Wow,I never knew the plant can be grown to flower that big.

Real nice cutie. Angraecums should be grown like phals (oops, I don't think you know how a phal should be grown like since its your first orchid anyway.. :p). Grow 50% shade, intermediate-warm. Water only when the top of the bark has dried out a bit. If not sure, puh your finger into the medium. If it feels cool and moist, don't water. Good luck! :)

That's pretty much what the orchid grower who sold it to me said. Partial sun, water only after it's fairly dry. :) I'm hoping it thrives and keeps blooming for me.

Sorry to disappoint, but most orchids do not 'keep blooming' throughout the year. Most, like this angraecum, are seasonal bloomers. So the next flowering will probably be around same time next year. But enjoy the flowers while they last.. :)

I didn't mean bloom constantly. I meant "keeps blooming in season throughout the life of the plant" as opposed to "spends years being a nice leafy things with no flowers" which many plants are prone to doing.

I have read all I can find about this orchid, I know it's a seasonal bloomer.

Hey, I just saw this thread. That is a cute orchid you have there. So small yet it flowers.
