CPs exhibition and competition in Penang Floral Fest 2008??
 

Penang Botanical Garden is having a Floral Fest from 29 Nov. to 7 Dec. There will a section for carnivorous plants exhibition. I will send my cps for the exhibition. The exhibition need at least 200 plants. Anyone interested to send your cps for exhibition? The organiser told me that we can claim for the transport fee or even all the costs if you are coming to Penang if they got enough fund!!

The organiser also informed me that to have a carnivorous plants competition is possible. May be can have 2 category. One for Nepenthes and another one for other cps. They have contact Ch'ien Lee and he had agree to be judge. But my concern is... there will not have enough participants.

Do you guys think that competition is possible? Please discuss.

:smile: Ooo….I hear from Eric (Owner of TG Shop) before, he said that this Penand Floral Fest is very big and he will be at there that day. Will persuade dad take me go there..hehe!! :laugh:
Got competition of CP? :confused: I didn’t hear it before…I think I dun have qualification to participant..because just start have CPs this August.…I think sure get people will participance..That day I went Green Penang Flora Exhibition at Auto-City,Juru..also got people show their CPs...

Thanks for the infor Lim. This is great. I think we should try to get CPers to join in the competition. It would be a great publicity for CP cultivation in Malaysia.

The problem is who is going to bring the plants over. If one has to sent the plant by post, then I'm sure nobody will be interested. As one has something to show meaning that's something very precious too. Unless we have someone who is able to take good care and bring the plants over to the exhibition. Then I think that's possible.

i figure if they are interested to join in the competition, they'll have to either go there themselves or entrust their precious plants with someone who is going there.

By the way Lim, any prize for the competition? Can we knwo what it is? I think that will be a pulling factor to attract peopel to join.

The competition is not yet confirm. But the exhibition is definitely on. Now just want to know how many people are able to send their cps for exhibition? And also competition?

You outstation people. Make you this deal since I don't have any plant to contribute, maybe... Makan on me for anyone who attends. I mean once off everyone together including local cp-ers at a time convenient for most people (cannot please everyone though, sorry). Will be happy to host some of you if I have place. New house still work in progress- next year maybe.

Yes Shawn, do pop by to get your passport stamped in Penang again. Good time and excellent excuse too to get out of that island paradise of yours. I mean Penang is is some sort of paradise... I think... unsure now.

Erm , how many of us can you put up in your house ? *smile* if cannot , nvm, don`t want to impose. oredi getting treat from you. heheh.

Question : 29th November is a Sat. so when does the plants for the competition have to arrive ? And I suppose it has to be there for the whole duration of the exhibition rite ? Meaning we have to leave it there and then get someone to send it back to us.

It`ll be easier to decide once we iron out the details, logistics etc

Once we are ok, perhaps we could commit to a CP each & plant our CPs to be at their matured best for that date. i.e. byblis must be maximum blooming stage then or sarracenia psittacina must be well fertilised & exposed to full sun to plump it up and get the rite colour.

Don't think I can put any of you in my place this year, like I said most probably next year. Dinner just to welcome brothers (and sisters) from other states, no big treat lah. Please have Gurney Drive hawker put out of your thoughts, more expensive than restaurant.

Interesting but afraid i can't join due to distance.
Just my suggestion, beside individual, nurseries can also be invited to take part. They usually have very nice neps-those that are for exbibit /not for sale plants. Good luck for those taking part.

Just discussed with the organiser this afternoon. The competition is on!

There will have 3 categories:
a) Nepenthes species
b) Nepenthes hybrid (included natural hybrid)
c) Assorted item (Other CPs)

A Gold, Silver and Bronze prize will be awarded to each of the categories. Prizes in cash money and winner certificate to be awarded as below:

Gold= RM 300
Silver=RM 200
Bronze= RM 100

All the participants will be also issued a certificate of participant.

Each participant are encouraged to submit as many CPs as they can.
However, limited numbers of items to be accepted are 200 plants.(Based on first come first served basic)

There will be 3 judges for the competition. (Ch'ien Lee, may be Charles Clarke, another one not sure yet)

The organiser will NOT BE RESPONSIBLE for any Losses and DAMAGES of any nature resulted from any unforeseen circumstances.

The closing date for registration is on 20th November 2008.

You can contact me for registration. No need register fee.

PM me your name , IC No, address, contact no, email, Species and number of CPs , if you are keen for the competition.

The CPs have to arrived in Botanical Garden on 28th November 2008. 9am-6pm. The CPs can be collected on 8th December 2008. 9am-12pm.

This is getting very exciting. Lim, thanks for co-ordianting this for the members. With both renowed Nepenthes celebrity there, ie. Ch'ien Lee and Charles Clark, it's gonna be an exciting competition... Not forgetting the prize money. :laugh: and the certs.

Hey guys! Any of you going for the exhibition or competition? I will be going on 27 November, Thursday and will be back to KL on either 29 or 30 November. I will be driving there, so if any of you from KL want a free ride to Penang and back, let me know ya. I still have space for 3 persons.

I believe we should support this event because I think this is the first time that a CP competition has been organised in Malaysia for everyone. It will be fun and we get to "poison" more people into thsi hobby.

As such if you guys/gals really can't make it and would like to place your plants in the exhibition or join the competition, I am willing to take your plants to Penang for you. However, you'll have to arrange to collect your plants back after the event as I am not staying there the whole week.

Hope to meet up with CPers from Penang over the weekend.

Really hoping to make it down there myself David. Although I think I'll have to fly in. Figure that I always really liked Penang even though it's been many years since my last visit. Besides, meeting all the CP'ers from the forum as well as a visit to the Botanical Gardens, and hopefully a hike or two to see some Neps in habitat sounds waaaaay too good to miss! :1thumbup: Hope to finally meet you all/some there in person!

Dear Shawn,

You can fly in to Penang from Koh Samui using firefly http://www.fireflyz.com.my/ in a Fokker Friendship Plane. Just checked, flights still available. I have never been on that airline before. If anyone like to book accomodation, the hotel nearest to the exhibition ground is Hotel Waterfall. Room condition I don't know as I never had to stay there.

I propose a meet up somewhere in the exhibition ground on Saturday the 29th afternoon?

I might be going too :D but im nt that sure yet...so will u guys be going on the day it starts or a day before or something like that.I'll only be going if i get good grades for my final year exams.My dad really wants be to get really really good grades and also if i do i can get a nep for RM 150 muahahahah.So wish me luck for my exam on october 21st to 5th of november,and if all goes well COUNT ME IN!!!!!!!

The organiser called me just now. He told me that got no enough fund and the competition have to cancel!! The competition only can run if got sponsor. Need about RM 6000.

Don't know still can have the exhibition or not. Will discuss with the organiser.

This is sad but there are still others activities and things we could do:

- PetPicther members gathering for food at the food capital of Malaysia
- PetPitcher members outings to see wild Neps
- Stalls at the Flora Fest
- Visit to some members homes in Penang to see their Cps/Plants
- Nursery visit
- Shopping for plants

I will still be going but might not stay for so many days. So see you guys/gals from Penang in November. :)

Yeah i've been to penang a couple of times already i always go there mostly during the chinease new year time.And also everytime i go there sure eat in a store with the curry laksa YUM!!!....So just asking if my parents are not free during that time is there like a transport there???Anyone can fetch??Still thinking not yet comfirmed

Ken, you are a very blessed fellow. Better put your head down this is a very good incentive but must considered one motivation only. Main motivation should be: Study hard to get good grades for your own future! Followed by, to please your slaving parents.

Jonathan, better watch out. Other students might enlist themselves too. (A few members comes to mind.) Wonder if I am eligible?

hey ken the main point is for you to study hard and be successful in future
you don't only study because you get a prize when you get a good grades.

Your hard work will pay off when you be successful in future and that is a prize that even money can't buy... study hard...
