Eight year old Phal. cornu cervi x violacea

Here's my phalaenopsis cornu-cervi x violacea grown for eight years and still going strong. I wish strong genes like this are in every single Phal species and hybrids.

Hi Ken,

The white phals you see for sale are actually hybrids combining Phalaenopsis amabilis and one or more other hybrid or species parent. The amabilis parentage gives the white colouration and yellow midlip but with generations of selective breeding for more rounded flower shape is what results in our full moon hybrids today. My two cents

Alvin,
I see you have quite an extensive of phals. in your collection. They are all very nice and distinct. Really like most of yours. Mine are mostly novelty type but not to the extend like yours. Will post some of mine as they are flowering now.

These are some of my novelty type Phals. Mostly are fragrant type, ie: violacea/ bellina type F2 or hybrids. All are mounted to driftwoods and kept on the drier side.

funkychips, your cross is a hybrid correctly known by the name Phal x valentinii. and its one of the nicest valentiniis I've seen.. The pattern of cornu-cervi is very nice against the soft blushing colours of violacea..

atmccmn, those are such gorgeous phals you have... :) P/s: Does anyone know where I might get straight Phal amabilis..? Preferably var. Borneo/var. grandiflora with long branching spikes..? TIA.. :)

Thanks Harris,Khoas and Andy. Harris, Phals do tend to have a long growIng life for a single plant, as with some other species, provided they do not often fall prey to rot or pests. I do spray pesticide and fungicide from time to time (space of six months) as I do not have much pest problems and the air in my garden is quite warm and fast drying. Khoas, do you grow Phals as well? Would very much love to see your collection if you do have any. Andy, the Phal is actually a random purchase made when I just started out growing orchids. I bought it from United Orchids Nursery previously in Hicom Glenmarie Industrial Park. I'm also interested in growing novelty phals, mainly the Taiwanese hybrids but they seem not to be able to flower well in our warm nights and days. One of the reasons why I prefer growing species or species-backcrossed hybrids.

Thanks, paphioboy. It is quite a frequent bloomer as well but with only one flower at a time.

Andy, indeed I have to say your collection IS extensive compared to mine, and blooming beautifully too. Even though I have several plants I don't have the conditions or the green fingers to make them bloom frequently. I see you are into bellinas and amboinensis type flowers. The bellina alba is gorgeous!! :2thumbup:
Anyway Happy New Year to you guys!!

This was bought as Phal. violacea var coreulea, but it does not have the distinct overall blue. It's a small plant, five inch long leaves and the flower is only 1.5 inch across.

Harris, thanks for the ID. I don't really go for their names.
Really like your violacea var caerulea, Alvin. They are hard to comeby. Have seen a actual blue flowered plant. It simply takes your breath out and burn a hole in your pocket too.........:crying:

Harris, yup that's the one!
I'm surprised you are allowed to take a photo. Nvm, a photo is also good when we can't own one:biggrin:

Re: Eight year old Phal. cornu cervi x violacea

Andy the owner of both plants are my friends so I'm allowed to take photos. The bellina blue in the first photo belongs to an orchid nursery owner in taiping. the violacea blue in the second photo belongs to a retired teacher cum orchid sifu. he bought it when it is still seedling size for RM250!
