Problem with N. eustachya leaves
« Thread Started on Dec 13, 2007, 10:10pm » Hi guys/gals,

Need a little advise here. My N. eustachya leaf recently have this black patch that starts from the apex and margins of the leaf nearest to the apex. The black patch will slowly grow to the base of the leaf. The black part of the leaf looks like it is dry and dead.

Sorry I do not have a picture. Could not get a camera to take the picture.

This happens to the older leaves. One of the pitcher lid has also the same problem. However, only the lid is affected. The pitcher still looks fresh. The lid is now completely black and has dried out.

I grow this plant under grow lights indoors.

I've really only had 2 cases of extremely mild fungus, and no other viral/fungal/insect pathogens/problems, so I'm notoriously bad at identifying them.

« Reply #2 on Dec 14, 2007, 11:19am » Try this: wipe carefully with 1) a dry cotton-bud on both blackened surfaced (top and bottom) and see if there is any powdery stuff caught on the cotton-bud; 2) repeat with a damp cotton-bud. If u find powder, probably fungus. no powder, can be many things, a pic would help.
If it is the oldest leaf, it is probably age, since it started at the apex and progresses to the petiole side. Happens to old pitchers ie lids of pitchers that dies first. Then the peristome and waxy region will go next, followed last by the glandular section.

« Reply #3 on Dec 14, 2007, 1:35pm » ok, I'll try with the cotton bud and see. It is not with the oldest leaf and the rest of my neps does not have these symtoms when the leaf is about to die. It is usually brown in colour and not black.

« Reply #4 on Dec 14, 2007, 3:00pm » Check also if the leaf is slimy and/or smelly - probably bacteria to the likes of Erwinia, Xanthomonas or Pseudomonas. Hopefully it is nothing serious. Maybe the weather.
