That really doesnt look like an S. minor to be, it looks mor elike a primary hybrid between minor and another Sarracenia, perhaps flava. Even very small pitchers of minor will have the trademark hoods and windows-my 2 inch high pitchers have two, and the entire plant has come otu of full dormacy a month ago!

thx Lisham.....got 2 more nice hybrids recently. One is a purpurea dark red and another is leucophylla ( wrong spelling i think ) hybrid but shows the white markings. I`ll post the pics when I have more time but well, folks tend to look down on hybrids. For me, since we can`t get the original species here ( either too expensive, won`t grow in our weather or no one brings them in ), I am willing to make do with hybrids. Love the original species tho if can get. My small collection is merely what I can buy from the local nurseries or sometimes from that rare Flora & Fauna expo. Cheers.... « Last Edit: Jul 24, 2007, 6:24pm by tarence »Link to Post - Back to Top Logged tarence

hewo... got something that I'm curious about... When is the best time to divide the sarracenia clumps if they get too crowded? Have to wait for dormancy ke? Can give step by step guide?

for me , no best time. when i see them looking crowded, it`s time.

what i do :

wash off all the medium. look for the new shoots and separate either using hands ( i like to feel my way around the plant so that i know which bumps show that a new plant is shaping up ) or scissors if the space is too limited.

try to break off only the plantlets which have roots attached. you can more or less see if all the medium is washed off.

if you happen th break off those without roots, give higher water levels, higher humidity levels, no direct sunlite until they are able to spout new leaves or show signs of life on their own.

i use peat moss, vermaculite and spag moss for medium....spag moss 85%, peat moss 10%..the rest verm.

keep away from sunlite for at least 2-4 weeks, if they are in bad shape, enclose them in see-thru plastic and keep water levels high. re-introduce to sunlite very very slowly.

happy trying !

stop calling me that Lisham...else i`ll run you over with my motorised wheelchair.

i guess you coud use only spag moss...i like to put in peat moss coz it seems to promote root growth. operative word being `seems to` coz i can`t really tell for sure.

Hehe, Tarence, I saw you using tall pot for tall Sarra, hmm... that prevent the pitchers from topple well. I have also changed one to tall pot, it helps.
Yes, the recent weather induced my S. flava & stenvensii to put out flowers too.

TS : using the tall pots also require higher water levels so i have to put them in planter boxes. the sarracenias don`t seem to mind high water levels ya ? unfortunately some of the taller ones still manage to topple over & bend coz of the rain water collecting in the pitchers. heheh.

this is the shortest flower i`ve seen for a sarracenia....it hangs like 2" off the ground...but lovely deep red flower. Bigger & has more petals altho i can`t angle the camera to take a shot of the petals.
