Some question on Neps.
« Thread Started on May 21, 2008, 12:08pm »
I got some basic questions regarding neps:
1. How long a picther can last?I dont mean the plant but the pitcher itself.
2.Do we need to pour water into the pitcher?2 years ago when i bought a pitcher plant the nursery ask me to fill 1/2 full the pitchers with water.
3.Can spraying water on the pitcher will cause it to decay?
4.Will a pitcher die if it consumes alot of insects or big insect?
5.Anybody try to add fetilizer organic or non organic into the pitcher?Any results? « Last Edit: May 21, 2008, 12:22pm by alienfx »Link to Post - Back to Top Logged hongrui

this depends on the species/hybrid and also on the growing environment. the thinner the pitcher wall is, the shorter the lifespan.
2.Do we need to pour water into the pitcher?2 years ago when i bought a pitcher plant the nursery ask me to fill 1/2 full the pitchers with water.
a healthy growing nepenthes will naturally have fluid in the pitchers. but should you accidentally pour out the fluid in the pitchers, you can half-fill the pitchers with water. otherwise, there's no need to.
3.Can spraying water on the pitcher will cause it to decay?
No.
4.Will a pitcher die if it consumes alot of insects or big insect?
i'm not too sure about this as my neps catch all sorts of insects by themselves, what i do know is if a pitcher traps a lizard (or something big), the rotting lizard may cause the pitcher to rot and die.
5.Anybody try to add fetilizer organic or non organic into the pitcher?Any results?
yes, fertilizer in pitchers have been tried before. results are very variable. can try reading up the old threads here to see the response. i recall there was a poll conducted too. « Last Edit: May 21, 2008, 1:27pm by hongrui »Link to Post - Back to Top Loggedlooking for different forms of N. ampullaria, N. rafflesiana and N. xhookeriana.

yes. There was a poll. I spray my neps everyday. No side-effect. And my neps catch loads of bugs without dying.

Regarding Pitcher life span, I have an N. Ventrata (I think) with pitchers that has so far lasted (and still is there) for 6 months or probably more. The two pitchers are half brown but the lower half is still green and doing fine. On the other hand some N. Alata pitchers lasted only a few weeks. Yes I agree it depends on the thickness of the pitcher. I too add a bit of water my case 1/4th full using as pure water as you can get (not tap), but yes no need to do this, specially if it is outdoors and you get occassional rainshower (like what we are having now where I live).
