Thanks guys. Compared to where you are David it is very dry. The soil is predominantly sand with clay mixed in. The tubers extend down into the soil a fair way to ensure they get the moisture they need in the winter. In the summer the soil is very dry, you could say it is baked, and that is when the plants retreat to the tuber.

This area is subjected to some mowing though it isn't very often. The major mowing program down there would really commence as the plants are becoming dormant to reduce the chances of a fire. The road side verge is mown more regularly and there aren't too many plants there.
