Re: Indoor Orchid Garden
Hi Ari,
You've really done well in decorating your airwell. It certainly does have the serene atmosphere with the addition of Buddha statues . I see you are having a vertical garden in the making. Very nice!:1thumbup: |
Re: Indoor Orchid Garden
thanks guy..actually i would have done more except the house doesnt belongs to me, sort like rented, well, in Jakarta when you rent a house its not like in Malaysia where pay monthly, here you pay everything in advance, for example 3 years, no choice la since my business is in Jakarta so need to rent and theres not much one can do to the garden if its a rented one...soon or later you have to give it up:wub:
One question i need to ask the experts and sifus here, do orchid do well in cooler climate? i have a house , a retirement home actually in west java, its about 1200 meters above sea level, temp about 20`C to 24`C all year round, misty in the morning up to 9am and its quite wet has it does get a lot of rain ...i know hybrid pitcher plants dont do well here expect for the local species ( they it call highland pitchers) is it possible or anyone has any experience planting wild lowland orchids in these condition? thanks in advance |
Re: Indoor Orchid Garden
Hi Ari,
You are very lucky to have a retirement home there. With that kind of temperature provided with excellent ventilation, you can grow almost everything. Quote:

Re: Indoor Orchid Garden
OMG Ari, this is exactly what my dream space is like!!! I've always wanted a house with an 'airwell' section. It's like a house biosphere, the air within the walls is always humid. One thing though, does the sunlight shine through the section all year round, I mean like when the sun rays shift during certain parts of the year?
Like Andy says, your retirement home is a dream garden waiting for you. The only limitation is space. Most lowland orchids can be grown from anywhere at sea level to highland conditions. I really really love to grow orchids too, but currently I do not have enough niche space to grow wet sensitive orchids like paphios. I hope to grow them this way where they get enough bright light but won't be overexposed to rain. Or do you control their watering? Please advise, I'm already head over heels looking at your garden space!! :spinning: Alvin |
Re: Indoor Orchid Garden
I can never seem to grow orchids but when i look at normal houses all around i see orchids in direct sunlight vining high up and flowering....

its easy actually...just leave them alone, minimal care and dont move them about i used to live in cheras many many years ago before moving on, its quite hot there but orchids do grow except its quite diffcult to get the orchids i wanted in KL ...so i was confined to mostly hybrids and bloody expensive too:mad: |

my airwell do get a few hours of direct sunlight, the left gets it in the morning around 10am the right gets it around 3pm...thats why all the good stuff are on the left side , many years ago the nusery aunty told me afternoon sunlight no good:blush: about paphios, the ones i saw in the wild (west java highlands) they are found among the roots of big trees and rocks, the ground is indeed wet or covered with moss...very little direct sunlight ever reaches them if it reaches them at all. i have collected them many times...but it seems they never can survive the hot climate of Jakarta which is below sea level, in the end i buy them from the nusery (rp20,000...abt rm7) and to my surprise the nusery man told me that he got them from the same place where i had collected only he collected the baby ones and grow them to proper selling size....guess i was greedy taking the daddy ones..well human la, when its for free, always take big ones*biggrin2* actually i do have a watering system.....its call PRT...'pembantu rumah tangga'...or indo maid as you call them in Malaysia:laugh:, she waters them once evey 2 days in the moning before sunrise yea the retirement house does have alot of space ...3.25 hectares of sloping land with 2 small spring water streams cutting thru and feeding Lake Saguling 6km away...this sort of land is not suitable for cultivation so to the mind of the kampung folks its worthless but to someone with a view to build an old english country home ...this is it man...a jewel. i got last year at 7000rupiah per sq meter( rm2)...so im broke now after paying for this and no more money to build any home yet. |
