My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
2 Attachment(s)
Just sharing my new "pets". Taken them out of the tissue culture vials last weekend. The original leaves (reddish colour) seems to have died down but in it's place new leaves (greener leaves). Looks like this species is quite a fast grower. Quite happy about that. Now to try to get it to turn all red.
Just to avoid misunderstanding, the media is not all course sand. That's just the topping. The media is about 2 parts sand and one part sphagnum peat. Attachment 449 Attachment 450 |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
David, what's under that sand? How deep is the sand and is anything else mixed in? I ask because my TC D. hartemeyororum just wasted away (melted down is a better description) ...although it may have been bothered by the long transit time to begin with. I worry that I was keeping them too wet when I see yours. Good luck with them!

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Ops! I just edited my thread to include that info. Only saw your info after I re-post

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Thanks David! Well, I did 'tests' with 1:1, 2:1, 1:2 peat:sand and a few with finely chopped sphagnum in each of the above. The D. harts all melted down so it was probably the transit shock.
I'm doing similar tests with germinating D. intermedia "Cuba" and the seeds on pure sphagnum have been up 3 days now and still no sign of any on the peat or peat:sand. I'm sure they will follow but it'll be interesting to see just how far behind. |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
I am using sand/peat (4:1) mix. This is fully hardened to my balcony conditions but I lost a couple when the weather suddenly turned hot and dry just for one day.

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Cindy, yours have become very bushy. Can't wait for mine to grow like that. Did your plants also loose its original leaves (when it was in the vials) after taking them out of the vials? But it's cools huh when they replace that with a few new growing points.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Those 'yellow glands' - are those the same as in that Drosera video from Austria? They were calling them 'runway lights' and showing them in micro-video! If you haven't seen it it's an easy download and there's a thread on it under movies/videos. Very weird, but very cool! You'll see what I mean! Anyway, those glands, under infra red glow like runway lights guiding the insects in!

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Cindy...lovely sundews...wished i had ordered. heheh.
the last pic....did one of your sundews get munched on ? the one on the bttm rite corner......it kinda looks like what keeps happening to my garden grown sundews......darn caterpillars & baby grasshoppers. |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Thanks, Shawn. Hmm...infra red light...I wonder if my remote control will work.
Tarence, Nope, fortunately. Only my N. distillatoria pitchers got chomped on recently. |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
I forget now shawn do they glow in infrared light or UV light? Need to watch the video again :)
Pretty sure your TV IR will not do the trick Cindy, sorry. But can't figure out what other source there is to test. UV lights, there are many LED UV lights being sold now in toy stores, the ones that allow you to write a secret message and use the UV light to show the message. That toy worked on my brother's scorpion nicely and even to show security indicators on paper money that glow on UV lights. TTFN Arvin |

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Great job David, I'm embarrassed to even think about taking a picture of mine! I think you guys and your artificial light set-ups are winning me over in terms of Drosera growing! The D. tokenensis seem to be doing the best out of everything I got from Alex and the D. scorpionoides gammae from CP_Unlimited are doing great!

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Shawn,
Why not build a few grow chamber just for your "pet" Sundews? I want to see as I know it'll be really nice. Or build something like what hongrui showed us before. A structure that protects the plants from rain. :) |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Was able to review the snaptentacles and running lights, and unfortunately I couldn't find any info if they glow in UV or IR, he used a flashlight to show that the running lights glow.
Yeah I love looking at mixed community bog pots... A mix of droseras would be nice too. That is why I have 12" diameter pots that are shallow for these, but 3 of them are now used for VFTs, but have some drosera plantlets sprinkled around. TTFN Arvin |

This species is fast becoming my favourite Drosera. i realised today that my "pet's" tentacles are turning red. New leaves are also starting to go red.

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Hi Bro...
Hmm.... Did you feed it with your blood bro? Hahas kidding... it's colouring up pretty nicely... soon it will be red red and red  Regards Jonathan |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
David, I'm getting the usual 'D. indica like' problem with my D. hartemeyerorum. The bottom part of the stem dries up, and the top part will start to topple.
Any advice? Should I cut + just poke it back in the media & pray hard it'll take root? Or do I chuck it in water? |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
A few of my plants are also showing this symptoms. I wonder why. Not only that the new leaves are very short. I am as lost as you. Lets see if others know about this.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Mine has topple over. The upper leaves are now much longer and more vigorous causing it to topple over. The insects it caught from the exhibition has given it sudden growth spurt.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
The D. indica and D. hartmeyerorum plants can be cut and the upper portion of the stem used as cuttings. Similar to how we do it to Byblis liniflora. Having said this, I have not tried it on D. hartmeyerorum before though a friend had. He said that the mother plant responded by sending offshoots up from the base of the stem.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
The taller plant was cut and replant again
Now i have 3 plant http://s392.photobucket.com/albums/p...t=DSC00295.jpg |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Mine is flowering now. Should I cut the flower?

I know, hoping it will be like D burmanii, keeping it alive by cutting flowers. Pollinaton? Self?

Thanks guys. Now have to kill off all other drosera flower stalks to avoid contamination.

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Took some pictures over the weekend. Quickly upload now.
The Flower I snap the picture at about one in the afternoon as the sepals were starting to close. https://forum.petpitcher.net/picture....&pictureid=461 https://forum.petpitcher.net/picture....&pictureid=462 The lens-headed tentacles and another inflorecence of D hartmeyerorum. https://forum.petpitcher.net/picture....&pictureid=464 The lens-headed tentacles (in yellow). https://forum.petpitcher.net/picture....&pictureid=463 In Stewart McPherson's book, Gelistering Carnivores (p110, Figure 90), the lens-headed tentacles will glow under torch light. Unfortunately I don't have permission to publish the photo. Will have to find a way to capture the picture in the evening. The petiole turning grasping an insect in order to subdue the insect, protect its nutrient source from other insects and maximise surface area for nutrient absorption. https://forum.petpitcher.net/picture....&pictureid=408 Picture courtesy of Uncle Ham. |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Your plant is growing very well for you Ban Aik. Mine have not flowered yet, sad to say. Nice photos that you have taken.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
 You make me blush.
David, try feeding the plant weekly. The tentacle in the last picture, well, it died many weeks ago and has grown about 2 inches since then. The last photo is provided by Uncle Ham, who hails from MNS. A friend Lim and I met during the floral fest. Managed to poison him also. Oh, his friend too. |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Hmm, I think that might be the problem. I never fed my hart and on top of that it is grown indoors under growlights. Ok, will start feeding it and see what happens.
** Off topic: Can you help talk to Uncle Ham and see if PetPitcher can work out some programs with MNS to promote both CPs and conservation of nature in Malaysia. It would be great if we can work with them. ** |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
mine's not red at all, but they do have them lens-headed tentacles.
https://forum.petpitcher.net/pict...&pictureid=498 https://forum.petpitcher.net/pict...&pictureid=499 BA,how's your growing condition? I put mine in a clear covered container, you can see the it in the 1st photo - I put the pot on top of the container. |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Wow Athene! That's very humid in the clear container. But they look good.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Hi David
I'm not sure if when the picture was token that the plant is inside the container.....Probally athene took it out. Ken |
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Of course it's out of the container! Otherwise, we won't be able to see anything, the container is all foggy with water condension. :)
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Oops i misunderstood david's post sorry :p

Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
That's totally cool Athene!
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
Constrictor alright. Don't have time to post some picture of the D hartmeyerorum flowers. I noticed that even the flowers have lens cells.
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
can this species really coil around their prey like that??? i am fascinated! hmm, sure you didnt gracefully twist the poor insect around the tentacle, athene??? it looks like something from a science fiction movie!!
|
Re: My tissue culture D. hartemeyororum
in fact, pronoucing the name of this species is a handful, i will need to go for vocal lesson to get it right!
