My first Venus Flytrap
Today I visited Green Penang flora exhibition at AutoCity-Juru and found some nice VFT for sale (better looking than those found at Giant) . I finally bought one home. Here is a photo of the plant. It is a typical green with red coloured traps.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...sensor/VFT.jpg Unfortunately during my journey home the plant was shaken and now most of the traps are closed. I was wandering how long will it take before the traps will re-open. I was told by the seller to give it plenty direct sunlight and keep the water tray filled. Hope it won't die on me. |
Re: My first Venus Flytrap
I have a question. Is it safe to put it under direct sunlight (very hot) the whole day? Scared that the plant might get fried. (morning sun is not that bad but afternoon sun is extremely hot.) Or are there any method to get full sun and yet do not get the extreme heat?

Re: My first Venus Flytrap
WOW! Finally you got some seller who got knowledge on the plant. Grow directly under FULL SUN!
Yes VFT has no problem to grow under full sun hmmm.. worry about fried VFT? hehe :2thumbup: my situation is I make sure I water the plant enough in the morning everyday and check it during evening time to see whether the soil media is moist or not. If dry, you have to water again. normally i will just soak it in a plastic ware full of water as long as the growing condition is windy and sunny |
Re: My first Venus Flytrap
Don't have to worry about the hot sun, mine have been "toasted" under Malaysian hot sun for years, they are still alive and growing fine  As long as a water tray is provided, and always keep an eye on the water in the tray as what Jeff suggested.

Re: My first Venus Flytrap
Totally agree with everyone's suggestion with Full sun, however I'd just like to add, that what you want to avoid is overheating the medium and therefore the roots and bulb. How to do so? Actually already mentioned, just make sure that there is water tray under it. The rule of thumb is 1 inch or 2 inches of water, but then it depends on how deep your pot is. It loves rainwater too by the way!!!
