Hi Ari,

You've really done well in decorating your airwell. It certainly does have the serene atmosphere with the addition of Buddha statues . I see you are having a vertical garden in the making. Very nice!:1thumbup:

thanks guy..actually i would have done more except the house doesnt belongs to me, sort like rented, well, in Jakarta when you rent a house its not like in Malaysia where pay monthly, here you pay everything in advance, for example 3 years, no choice la since my business is in Jakarta so need to rent and theres not much one can do to the garden if its a rented one...soon or later you have to give it up:wub:
One question i need to ask the experts and sifus here, do orchid do well in cooler climate? i have a house , a retirement home actually in west java, its about 1200 meters above sea level, temp about 20`C to 24`C all year round, misty in the morning up to 9am and its quite wet has it does get a lot of rain ...i know hybrid pitcher plants dont do well here expect for the local species ( they it call highland pitchers)
is it possible or anyone has any experience planting wild lowland orchids in these condition?

thanks in advance

Hi Ari,

You are very lucky to have a retirement home there. With that kind of temperature provided with excellent ventilation, you can grow almost everything.

OMG Ari, this is exactly what my dream space is like!!! I've always wanted a house with an 'airwell' section. It's like a house biosphere, the air within the walls is always humid. One thing though, does the sunlight shine through the section all year round, I mean like when the sun rays shift during certain parts of the year?

Like Andy says, your retirement home is a dream garden waiting for you. The only limitation is space. Most lowland orchids can be grown from anywhere at sea level to highland conditions.

I really really love to grow orchids too, but currently I do not have enough niche space to grow wet sensitive orchids like paphios. I hope to grow them this way where they get enough bright light but won't be overexposed to rain. Or do you control their watering? Please advise, I'm already head over heels looking at your garden space!! :spinning:

its easy actually...just leave them alone, minimal care and dont move them about
i used to live in cheras many many years ago before moving on, its quite hot there but orchids do grow except its quite diffcult to get the orchids i wanted in KL ...so i was confined to mostly hybrids and bloody expensive too:mad:

Yea man i didnt gave a thought about the direction of light when the earth shift...thanks for reminding me and now i got another headache to deal with:laugh: sort like when you dont know you wont do anything about it, but when you do know you will roll on your bed thinking on how to deal with it:tongue:

my airwell do get a few hours of direct sunlight, the left gets it in the morning around 10am the right gets it around 3pm...thats why all the good stuff are on the left side , many years ago the nusery aunty told me afternoon sunlight no good:blush:

about paphios, the ones i saw in the wild (west java highlands) they are found among the roots of big trees and rocks, the ground is indeed wet or covered with moss...very little direct sunlight ever reaches them if it reaches them at all. i have collected them many times...but it seems they never can survive the hot climate of Jakarta which is below sea level, in the end i buy them from the nusery (rp20,000...abt rm7) and to my surprise the nusery man told me that he got them from the same place where i had collected only he collected the baby ones and grow them to proper selling size....guess i was greedy taking the daddy ones..well human la, when its for free, always take big ones*biggrin2*
actually i do have a watering system.....its call PRT...'pembantu rumah tangga'...or indo maid as you call them in Malaysia:laugh:, she waters them once evey 2 days in the moning before sunrise

yea the retirement house does have alot of space ...3.25 hectares of sloping land with 2 small spring water streams cutting thru and feeding Lake Saguling 6km away...this sort of land is not suitable for cultivation so to the mind of the kampung folks its worthless but to someone with a view to build an old english country home ...this is it man...a jewel. i got last year at 7000rupiah per sq meter( rm2)...so im broke now after paying for this and no more money to build any home yet.

Nice setup you have... :) And you have a very nice collection of species orchids.. May I ask what medium you use to grow your paphiopedilum? I see you have glaucophyllum and bullenianum..

BTW, please do not collect paphiopedilum from the wild as they are endangered (CITES Appendix 1 plants).

i didnt know they are protected brader...its a surprise actually, as i could see plenty of them in west java some grew very big...mostly glaucophyllum.
i would not even buy one if i know they are protected brader the same way i will not buy an arowana fish
maybe in indonesia the law is lax but then its not an excuse anyhow

i use palm oil roots as medium, the bottom is filled with white foam

since we are talking abt protected species...i have some rare wild ones from papua...i dont know if they are protected or not but the local irian jaya( indonesian side of papua) state goverment had banned all wild orchids getting thru the state borders...i got mine away before the ban

let me know if these are protected or not ya brader

Bulbophyllum Graveolens
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...a/DSC02546.jpg

Dendrobium Spectabile
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...a/DSC02546.jpg

all i know the price of these two had sky rocketed since the ban...about 8 times. lucky i got mine while they are still cheap...too bad i didnt get more of them

what about this one brader...its given to me by a friend, no idea what it is but its abt to flower.....Malaxis???

Interesting... Palm oil roots.. Where do you get this..? As far as I know, bulbo graveolens and dend spectabile are not in CITES (yet)... Many nurseries have propagated them from seed, so should be more widely available. The terrestrial looks like the common jewel orchid Ludisia discolor.. Interesting that yours is flowering. Ludisia usually doesn't flower in the lowlands..

i buy the palm oil roots from the nusery, they come in square blocks, the same ones i use to mount my orchids , the blocks does a good job of remaining moist but not too wet...moss simply love to grow on such and quickly....for pots i break them up with a hammer

ah good if they are not on the list meaning theres still a steady population in the wild.
nursery propagated graveolens and spectabile are available in jakarta but not too often you see them, the price is not too expensive and they do grow nicely without much problem. the only problem according to the local experts is nursery propagated ones does not smell as good as the wilds ones...thus the heavy price for the wilds and with the ban in force , the price sky rocketed
i always had a hard time telling apart wilds and nursery orchids even though the seller claims honesty i still have doubts
better to rely on friends who are more into this, usually they are the ones who will make the decision for me to buy or not or its a fake.
the only tell sign i know is wilds one always looks fragile, dry and busted up while nursery ones are robust ,shinning green and healthy looking

so brader how do you guys in Malaysia tell apart nursery and wild ones?

these are nursery propagated spectabiles ...healhty and not too expensive...about Rupiah 250,000 (rm85)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...a/DSC02537.jpg

the seeds looks tempting.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...a/DSC02536.jpg

i almost bought this..until my friend told me "jangan yang ini...buang waktu"

hmm.. I think you are referring to tree fern slabs, not oil palm..

As you mentioned yourself 'the only tell sign i know is wilds one always looks fragile, dry and busted up while nursery ones are robust ,shinning green and healthy looking'... Its best to buy a plant that is established in its pot, not bare root. Most species orchids sold bare-root tend to be collected fresh from the jungle, and may harbour disease.. They also take a very long time to establish.

The last dend spectabile looks good. Why did your friend say its a waste of time..? Maybe he meant that the plant is reluctant to flower soon as its supporting so many seed pods..

the man who sold me the slab said it was sawit..., since you mention fern i think you are right too...probably i take a closer look at the slab later

yes you are right it does take a long time to establish, and even longer to flower, but thats the enjoyment one gets for keeping species orchid, sort like if one of your hybrid orchid flowers ..you would probbly say , yar ok, but if one of species orchid stars to show sign of a flower bud...you be flashing your cameras:biggrin:
how do clean up the diseases , actully i never thought abt this brader...thanks

i dont know why he said dont buy...i would ask him when i see him, but i do know he is one of the fanatic for wild orchids ...it would be a sin to bring hybrids into his home he said:blush:
