Default Is this phyllodia?

Hey, everyone.......

My sarracenia purpurea has been growing something funny lately. It looks like phyllodia to me, and at first, I thought it was normal fern. However, I check to see where the FERN was connected to and my suprise was, it was from the sarra itself!

Right there, the alien in the pitcher world

The whole plant intact.

Anybody can help me?

Cheers

Hi Edward

Well i guess this phyllodia only appears near times where the plant is ready to go for dormancy or needs it....To me i guess it creates non carnivorous leaves like this because there is not a use for carnivorous ones.....Or maybe photosyntesis???

As i see in the picture your sarr is starting to make smaller pitchers already.......Time for dormancy maybe????

I don't give mine any sort of that hehehehe.............And its growing like nuts.....

Ken

Hi Ken, purps don't usually produce phylodia. Often leaves that look like phylodia are caused by insufficient light. I have just had to move my purp as the leaves began to develop like phylodia and they are just at the begining of the growing period. Looking at the colour of the new traps in the photo I would suggest you increase the light levels. Cheers.

Thanks for the advice.

I am growing them at the balcony. Not enugh light!!!! And my parents don't agree with the idea of grow lights at all.

Cheers

No wonder mine didn't produce any phyllodia. But its drying up so slowly I don't know if its dying or dormancy.

Grow lights can be hard to justify. Generally the prostrate Sarra's (purp's and psittacina) tolerate less light than the other Sarra's. I just bought an oreophila that still has the phylodia from winter. I will take a photo later and post a new thread to show what they look like.
