My s.rubra gulfensis had some seeds & I bleached them before sowing in the same pot as the mother plant. They germinated within 4 days and this is how it looks after 3 weeks. Slow growing but they are growing. I remember sowing 4 seeds but I now have7 plantlets. Errrr....heheh. « Last Edit: Oct 6, 2007, 10:40pm by tarence »Link to Post - Back to Top Logged cactustts Pioneer Member / Global Moderator member is offline Joined: Dec 2006 Gender: Male Posts: 584 Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Re: Sarracenias from seeds « Reply #1 on Oct 7, 2007, 12:33am » Hey Tarence, you didn't stratify your seeds, and instead bleached them! Ooh... That's something new I heard of treating sarra seeds. I should try that with old seeds if I have any. If that work, meaning we don't have to go thru the long stratification process any more, haha, that's good, that's good. I have some sarra plantlets just germinated not too long ago, the germination rate is quite high, about 90%. How come your germination rate was 175%? hmm... strange... Aei? Why not, that'll be a new variant then - S.rubra gulfensis alba « Last Edit: Oct 9, 2007, 12:04pm by cactustts »Link to Post - Back to Top LoggedTS tarence Global Moderator member is offline Joined: Apr 2007 Gender: Male Posts: 1,523 Location: Bandar Kinrara , Puchong Re: Sarracenias from seeds « Reply #6 on Oct 9, 2007, 1:32pm » Only time will tell, TS.....heheh. The last time i sowed sarra. seeds, I had only 1 germination, then after 6 months, another one germinated. The big surprise is that both grow at the same rate now, the 2 months old and the 8 months old! Thank god I didn't chuck the media - pulverized pure sphagnum moss. Any recommendation on the best media to use? « Last Edit: May 2, 2008, 9:26pm by ameliepoulain »Link to Post - Back to Top LoggedAthene's CP Growlist Athene's Wishlist arvin555 Junior Member member is offline Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 64 Location: Phillipines Re: Sarracenias from seeds « Reply #9 on May 2, 2008, 10:19pm » Tarence, may we know how exactly did you bleach them? Water to bleach ratio? How long? What did you do after you bleached them? etc. I have some VFT seeds trying to germinate them for 3 months now, nothing, and I have some sarra seeds in the ref now being stratified. Of course the seed that I got were from a novelty store, so I am not sure if they are still viable or not. Then the whitish inner seed was visible. It took 2 hours i think but the time will dpeend on what seed you are bleaching & how thick the outer layer is. It`s just an experiment yah ? After i bleached the outer seed layer off, I rinsed the inner part of the seed about 50 times to try to get rid of the bleach...then sowed the seeds directly to media. happy trying..... One thing, if you guys want to try, the fastest way to get rid of bleach is to use Anti chlorine from aquarium fish shops. The chemical name is "sodium thiosulfate". The problem is that I am not sure but it might create salt as by product so after using this, rinse well again. But it sure is heck effective in neutralizing chlorine, a few seconds is all it takes, and you dissolve a few drops in water and then dump the seeds in to neutralize the chlorine. Again another experiment to try. TTFN Arvin Link to Post - Back to Top Logged |
