Default problem

hey guys ive been trying to grow VFTs for years (i get mine from cactus valley) but it always ends up dead.

i never knew that VFTs need full sunlight. i put mine in perhaps 50/50 sunlight ratio and water it everyday but it ended up dead. (the leafs fail to produce new traps)

can anyone explain to me why this happens?

thanks

Hi malowie,
Welcome to the forum, mind to tell which part of Malaysia are you from?
I'm not too sure of what you meant by 50:50 ratio, but I suppose you mean 50% sunlight. Insufficient of light resulted the failure of producing full traps, and you watered it every day, it could be too wet if your condition is too dim, that will cause root rot, end up the plant say bye bye.
A dim condition could trigger the plant to go dormant as well. If the plant go into dormancy, then over watering should be the cause of the death.

hmm.. yeah perhaps thats why.. im living in PJ actually and sorry for the confusion, as i meant 50% sunlight. i did not put it in full sunlight. i also had the impression that it would get fried lol..

anyway, is there a need for VFTs to enter a dormancy period if its in malaysia?

Hi Malowie, welcome to the forum. When the plant puts out leaves but does not produce traps that is a sign that they are not receiving enough light. If you increase the light the plants will improve. VFT's will require dormancy at some stage but youshould be able to grow them for a few years at least without a rest. Eventually though the plant will begin to reduce in size as it becomes exhausted. You will also find that if you provide full sunlight, the traps will colour up aswell.

hi Malowie

are your vfts near any orchids or flowering plants ? sometimes when we fertilise the other plants, some of the fertiliser spills over ( esp orchid fertiliser spraying ) & your vft would go into shock-mode & refuse to produce traps as it no longer needs traps to catch insects as it has found nutrients.

but this wouldn`t kill it lah.

if u r in pj, you can swing by our houses to see how vft is grown. i`ve been growing them for almost 10 years. *smile*

perhaps you could update your profile address to PJ, Malaysia so that we don`t keep asking where in M`sia you are from. tq....

Malowie, you could browse thru this VFT section on the dormancy problems, I think you would find some usefully info to grow this love plant.

i got my vfts from s`pore...orchard road ColdStorage supermarket. got them twice but they did not survive ( label says from south africa, very nicely packed )

then i met my sifu Wilson Chua. he introduced me to his own homegrown vfts ( i can`t remember where he got them from ) & those are the initial plants which form my present collection. i have added on some vfts varieties but my personal fav remains as the simple typical form.

ic.. yeah plants from overseas dont really survive.. last time i brought back some dahlia bulbs from australia. they produced a lot of leaves but did not flower. later, the buls started to rot and it died.

anyway, is it okay to leave the VFT outdoors in FULL burning (lol) sunlight and allow the heavy rain water to pour on it everyday?
