Drosera Binata seeds
Hi, everyone......I just want to know. Drosera binata isn't a self flowering species, right? Because I got a dried up flower stalk from my friend and I don't know whether there are seeds or not. I really hope that those dried flowers I got have seeds cause this will be my first drosera in my collection........
He never pollinated the flowers, I dunno, very confusing. Anyways, I have stratify the seeds(not sure whether they are seeds) and just took them out of my fridge 2 days ago. Oh, yeah, Khoas said that there is a self flowering species of binata, I am geting confused! Btw, no pictures....sorry..... Cheers

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
I am guessing you mean Self Pollenating? If your friend gave you a whole flower stalk and it was fresh, I would have gone and cut off the stalk and put that on sphagnum, might grow plantlets, but might be too late now. I am not experienced with Binata, I have one but no flower yet, I am not sure if they need stratification, but I would have sown them as soon as possible.
What I do with my drosera seeds is put them in say a ziplock bag and shake them from time to time, the small seeds if there is any will eventually collect on the bottom. The fresher the better so sow as soon as possible. If your friend can give you some leaves, you can do some leaf cuttings too, they are fairly easy to get plantlets from leaves, one actually grow without my help at all, the leaf just happened to lie on a nearby pot of capensis and grew plantlet from there. Good luck! TTFN Arvin

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
Hi Edwin, Arvin is right, you would be better off with a leaf cutting or a root cutting to get a binata gowing. The flowers do require cross pollination so unless your friend had two binata's and they were both flowering then it is unlikely that you will get seeds.
They do not require stratification as they grow here in Australia where we don't get temp's that low. Fresh seeds are always best but Drosera seeds will keep if stored in a fridge for many years. Cheers |

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
Almost all binata varieties do need two clone for cross pollination. The one exception is binata var. dichotoma 'Small Red' which self pollinate and spreads very well.

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
Well, my friend is only 11 years old, so I can't blame him. But, I wish that I didn't simply sow those seeds for no reason......yes, sorry, arvin, I meant self pollination. Well, no progress so far.....real irritating, I just wanted my first drosera.......
Cheers

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
Absolutely lame. Those binata seeds are NOT binata seeds. Using the pots now for a different speces of drosera, which is intermedia. And I lost my miranda cutting.
Cheers

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
Used LFS. the china brand, I don't have anything else. Oh yeah, my miranda cutting may still work. I just made it shorter and dipped it in rooting hormone.
Cheers

Re: Drosera Binata seeds
I used china brand LFS too. Be careful. If you grow them too close......it will be hard to separate. All of my intermedia seeds germinated. Now my intermedia pot is full of them. I've even sold 3-4 of them.
