Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome only

Hi Guys,

This is the result of my VFT leaf pulling with rhizome. Environment condition is open space with direct sunlight, on water tray. For my case it takes around 6weeks to start seeing growth of VFT plantlet.



I had another experimental leaf pulling with no rhizome (without the white portion) and until now (after 2months) still no sign of life and the leaf is already completely rotted.

Summary: It is good to have rhizome on your leaf pulling. With it the chance for growth is high.

Yeah this is great documentation on leaf pullings.

One thing about leaves that doesn't have the white portion is that in all of your photos, the plantlets started in the white portion so really we can say that it does make a big difference.

I also like how you covered parts of the leaf with moss, but the base is just a bit laid on top of the medium... is this correct?

I will post a photo of a flowerstalk that has grown a plantlet soon as my contribution.

Hi arvin,

Correct. The leaf is just placed on top with the base portion touching the moist media.

One other thing I noticed with the photo, is tha tyou started with brown sphagnum moss and when they started sprouting with plantlets the moss is green from algae

In my experience you can take a leaf pulling almost any time. It's best to choose a healthy leaf, but I've also had success with older dying leaves that I've pulled off when repotting.

I would think that you'd have the best luck in the spring time when new leaves start forming and pull one of the newest ones.

Yeah, and I don't remember where I read it, but there was a forum member who actually made an experiment, bought a VFT and divided it by pulling off all the leaves and planting them, ended up with several plantlets. Of course he wa out 1 big plant and has actually sacrificed 1 whole VFT plant to get a few plantlets, wonder what happend to his plantlets. Plantlets are a bit difficult to take care off and grow to maturity though so be careful.

I've actually done this. I bought 2 plants last March and tore them into pieces. Each of the leafs got a part of the rhizome. I was actually able to leave a good chunk of the rhizome in tact with roots and all, so the plants came back quickly. I probably ended up with somewhere around 50 plantlets from these 2 plants. After one summer, some of them are quite large, but most of them are pretty tiny still. I expect that they'll grow a lot this summer because they're pretty established now.

I have tried the leaf pulling on my typical. After one month, it hasn't shown any signs of growth at all. The trap has blackened, but the whole petiole is intact and still fine. I just simply put it in a pot of LFS without any plastic bag.

Hopefully it can work. Any ideas, anyone?
