N. albomarginata in Kedah

Hi folks,

Since I got poisoned by neps not too many moons ago , I've always wanted to see neps growing in the wild with my own eyes and study how and where they grew, I have never seen them in the wild before this trip. So this past sunday my friend and I had a chance to go recee and we managed to find common N. albomarginata but we didn't discover other species... It was just a half day trip but will definately return again in near future hopefully to be able to see more species....

Hi there cpnut,

It must have been thrilling for you to see them growing in the wild. I remembered the first time I saw albos growing in the wild, my heart just went bouncing like a ball. Can feel the blood rush though my veins.

I also noticed too that albos picther and plant will have reddish colouration when they are exposed to sunlight. Like you, those that I saw growing in the shade are green and most of them have no pitcher.

The site where I saw albos was in Perak and the media where some grow are also quite dry.

Good photos for your first try. Keep it up and keep us updated with pictures of nepenthes in Kedah ok? we can compare their growing condions in different locations etc. Thanks for posting

This plant was found at a very dry site among rocks under direct sun... that's why so red

Quite a few albos found under forest canopy, many plants got no pitcher at all... need sun

Surprisingly, we saw more red albo and the red speckle or 2 tone ones... I think I only saw one with green upper. Hope you folks like it.

Great field trip photos CPNut! I've been trying to find shots of albos in nature, as I bought a large number of small ones from MT earlier this year and have been wondering just how to treat them. I love the way the leaves look on the majority of your first set of photos...really makes me want to run down and change my plants position to a drier environment than where they are now! Keep posting!

Haha... my heart was like "pip pop pip pop".... When I saw the 1st pitcher, I just stood still and just stared at it... didn't know what to do next...my mind just blank

Hope future trip I'll be able to find a few more species and have something good to report back... Thanks.

Thanks Shawn, ya... from my observation, wild albo can definately tolerate very dry condition and direct sunlight. In fact, I saw better looking plants with nicer picthers all under direct sun. Also noted that they don't really need a lot of substrate to grow on, many grew on the rocky walls (if you take a look at the orientation of the picthers especially from the 1st set of the pics) with just a thin layer of moss.

I guess mother nature still have a few tricks up her sleeves... I have a albo red "rubra" from Fauzi, maybe I should try it under direct sunlight, hope it won't be cooked...

I only noticed small plants have this kind of red coloration whereas bigger or adult plants will have olive green color leaves, have anyone ever noticed this before?
