Wow, that's a pretty flower indeed. What's your growing condition for this utric, Ifurita? Can we grow this alpine utric in lowland condition? Or could it be a hybrid if it do so? Really big flower, love it

Thanks guys!! I love Utric flowers too. Now if only my U. reniforms would flower for me :P
I'm not sure how small is small...but my palm is about 8.5cm wide... Quote:
Anyway, this guy sits at the windowsil in my bedroom, so it gets normal afternoon heat, which can go up to 35C and is usually at least 30C. I seldom gets any direct sun though, but the area is quite bright. I think it can probably be grown outdoors if not thrown out under direct sun. Yup, I love the huge flower too! And guess what? Its not solo...it came with 2 others(only just opening)!! If only my U. reniformis and/or U. humboldtii would flower...now that would truely be something to see. |

Hi Ifurita, one more question (so much things to ask
![]() You mentioned you placed your utric at your windowsill, did you switch on aircond at night? If you do so, your plants will be airconditioned during night time, could it be one of the factors that made it flower? |

If you can keep U. gibba alive and it grows well for you, its really easy to get it to flower. You need to make sure that the plant is overgrown to the point where the plant body is practically an intertwined green "mat" and then drop the water level till the water doesn't cover the surface of the "mat". Growing it in a small container helps. I did this to mine and it flowers non-stop. Yup, I turn on the air-con at night, but that particular window is in a warmer corner of the room...at most it drops to around 22C or so, usually 24C. I doubt that's a factor, otherwise the plant would've flowered earlier. Its been with me for almost a year and is only flowering now. I suspect that the end of the rainy season(more light + warmer days) is probably the cause. Size and health are also factors to consider here: I've got others from this group and this is the only one which is flowering. My U. alpina, U. endresii, etc are not flowering, probably because they're not large enough and/or healthy/stable enough. Also, different Utrics have different flowering triggers, even within the group: light change, temp change, size, enforced rest, etc. |
