N. hurrelliana x veitchii ??
« Thread Started on Jan 12, 2008, 11:27pm »
This is the tc clone from MT of N. hurrelliana x veitchii.

I find it hard to believe that this plant has any N. hurrelliana in it. From hybrids EP has done with this, almost every seedling of their hybrids have been vividly colored. The stripes, even peristome shape depicts N. hurrelliana in their hybrids.

But this hybrid shows very little inheritance of hurrelliana. I would say that this is just plain veitchii.

While hurrelliana may resemble veitchii, the plant habit and development of the pitchers is very distinct.

Anyone else wants to provide their input of this hybrid?

M

Hi Michael:

The hybrid is actually veitchii X hurrelliana and I agree with you there. Very little hurrelliana, which makes me wonder about the species status of hurrelliana anyway!
In other words, there is far more veitchii than hurrelliana than meets the eye!(referring to both species)

The plant habit itself is almost 100% veitchii in habit. Most of the primary hybrids between veitchii and the other parent is roughly split with slight characteristics of each. This pulls very strong N. veitchii and it would not surprise me if it really was just a pure veitchii clone.

It's still a great-looking pitcher.
Michael, does the peristome get kind of goldish like the one that is left /below?

Cheers,

Joe

The peristome matures goldish, but with very faint stripes. I wish it had more vivid stripe and coloring of a true N. hurrelliana. Also oddly for a hurrelliana, the plant is faintly fuzzy. N. veitchii is fuzzy and hurrelliana is very hairy, yet this cross is virtually hairless.

Hi,

This is my N.veitchii x hurrelliana. The peristome is goldish and with a slight stripe on the peristome.

This one is the N.veitchii x fusca. A bit longish than the N.veitchii x hurrelliana and slightly thinner. Pitcher having some brown spot and the peristome really showing metallic red in colour.

I believe MT had these clones named as Lebih and (I forgot the other name) do you know which is which? I also have the fusca hybrid and that appears to be true. the veitchii x hurrelliana may not be true though. The plant appears to be more true veitchii than hurrelliana.

Hi,

MT named the N.veitchii x fusca as "N.xCemerlang". I think these hybrids are the last few from CCL before he leave MT

The N.veitchii x hurrelliana does look more like the N.veitchii. I do not know about N.hurrelliana as I have never seen a live plant before. I know that it is a very hairy species.

Hi,

When these plants are small you will not be able to identify them, only when the peristome starts the colouring then you know that it is a N.veitchii x fusca as the N.veitchii x hurrelliana will start with a stripe on the pitcher.

Thanks

Hi,
just a question, do you guys all grow these (veitchii and veitchii x hurreliana) under strong sunlight? I was wondering why the leaves on your plants are all so 'clean' and green, unlike those on mine which seem to get rather yellow/gold in full sun.
thanks

Thanks

Mine is in rather bright sunlight. About 50-75% filtered for the afternoon for four hours, but direct from morning to mid-day. Its all about the fertilizing and watering when it comes to veitchii's.

My N. veitchii x hurrelliana from MT. Where are the hurrelliana genes?

Cindy,
This plant appears too close to a true veitchii than ever having anything to do with hurrelliana. The few hurrelliana hybrids I have are truly vivid colored things. Even when crossed to a Rokko, the resulting offspring are wildly colored reef fish all with vivid stripes and a ton of fuzz!
This hybrid seems rather bald to have been associated with a hurrelliana.
