I personally just put them in a container box without the cover outdoors...Just mist everyday once or 2 days once...

soo, it was too wet and cause the mold. you've to get rid of the water. The media need to be moist [ not wet or standing on water ]. It's fine to use cover to get the seeds to germinate, and not alot of water is needed to moisten the media, since water is recycle within by evaporation and condensation.

you will be opening the cover to check the progress regularly but make sure the media don't dry out.

see what you've done, you've some work to do now. pick out the affected seeds and clean them by placing in small container with water, add a drop of washing detergent and give a good shake. once done place seeds in another container with sterile water, swirl it to clean excess impurities from the seeds. Alternatively use fungicide.

is it alright that I close the cover tight and open it once a day or does it need good air circulation?

Try to make some holes on the cover, it'll help with ventilation yet still able t o maintain high humidity with lower chance of getting mold outbreak...

I don't cover anymore my seeds since a good while because I always got probs with algae and mold. I did some tests with my own harvested seeds. So I got lots of them and the risk of loosing some precious seeds wasn't so high. There was nearly no difference in the germination rate. The covered seeds didn't even germinated faster what I would have expected.

Just another method germinating seeds. I just tried once and it worked nice. Here is now my second try with this method. You need living sphagnum for this and you have to chop it very fine. So it won't start overgrowing the seeds. Living sphagnum is anti-fungicide and no algae will grow on it.
Just put the fine chopped living sphagnum in a petri-dish, close it and open once a day the petri-dish to let some fresh air come in.
