Updates on Sg. Buloh Nurseries
« Thread Started on Feb 1, 2007, 9:45pm » Hi guys,

I was at Sg. buloh today to check out what new plants they have for the Chinese New Year.

All nurseries seem to have only the usual N. xventrata and some small N. rafflesiana.

However, I found a nursery offering quite a few species of neps. They also have Sarra and VFTs. The nursery name is Hee Nursery.

Drive into sg. buloh nursery area, pass the new hospital and drive straight into the road where there are nurseries on your left and right. Before the small temple on your left there is a road turning left. There's where there are a lot of orchids for sale.

Turn in. The first nursery on your right is Hee Nursery. Below are the plants I found there:

- N. miranda (small/medium/giant size plants)
- N. rafflesiana (small pots)
- N. sanguinea (green)
- N. sanguinea (dark purple brown)
- N. xhookeriana
- N. ampullaria
- N. truncata
- N. xventrata
- N. ventricosa (big pot)

- VFT (typical green form)
- Sarracenia (whole plant seem to be green)
- S. purpurea

I think the truncata, ventricosa and rafflesiana are from Malesiana Tropicals. I think this is what Juliana said that MT plants will be available in nurseries in *****ular Malaysia.

The plants are going for about RM28-38 (small/midium pot) and depending on species, the price varies.

I was so tempted to buy a hookeriana but I already have one huge plant at home. Would not have the space for it. I ended up getting a N. sanguinea (purple/brown). It's a tissue culture plant.

The owner tells me that they do not sell wild collected plants but I think the ampularias are from the wild. All other plants look like tissue culture plants.

Wow, that is really expensive. Probably CNY price. I will wait until after CNY to pay them a visit since I'll be going outstation, don't want to take the risk.

I personally like them because of the shape of their pitchers and the many different variety of colours and colour combinations.

« Reply #8 on Feb 6, 2007, 11:14pm » Ya, I personally like ampullaria a lot. Like what David said, the colour variation and combination, and the shape too, so cute. And they can grow quite big if the environment is right. But I think the basals formed is the main factor to 'lure' people to buy. Ooh, we are their prey too!

yeah, like David said, the variation is worth to collect. i personally think that the basals and the unique shape is the main attraction. Its just that sometimes i feel that it is a bit pricey. Hmm maybe its becos i cant afford to buy an RM200 amp

But for the truncata, I think it is reasonable if you compare with MT's plants when they arrive. These plants are double the size of MT's plants when they arrive and they alrady have 1-3 pitchers. On top of that you get to choose.

« Reply #14 on May 4, 2007, 10:06am » I have seen N. ampullaria in the wild. They even have clusters of pitchers not only at the base but hanging from 10 feet high as well. The jungle area also has plenty of N. gracilis ( they grow & climb up to 20 / 30 feet ), an unidentified form of N.albomaginata, N. hookeriana....

A trip to Genting Gunung Bunga Buah area also has fab highland pitcher plants growing on the roadside cliffs. This is before the actual trek. A sight to behold for those of you who have not seen wild highland nepenthes in all its glory before. The matured plants have foot long dark red or bronze pitchers, I don `t have my reference book at the moment to idnetify the variety but there are about 3 highland species there.

A friend & I are also trying to hunt for wild droseras in Peninsular. My kuching friend found d.burmannii over there & he says peninsular should have as well. The growing areas should be bright open area but damp. Hilly area.

Liang was telling me last weekend that the Government has asked all of them to shift to another location in Subang. (Lucky Zak...). Is this true? Lousy laaa, now it will not be at my doorstep.

By the way Jonathan, how much is the albomarginata going for? How big is the plant?

Abt the Sg Buloh nurseries shifting, i also head abt the rumors. A fren of mine is from sg buloh and his parents own a nursery there. Actually the land where the nurseries are, is not their own property. They just 'tumpang' the government's land. My fren said, sooner or later they have to shift, but the location is not yet decided.

My turn to report. Today afternoon I went to the Sg buluh nurseries, was surprised at the sizes of the pitchers there, not many varieties, mainly the regular suspects, green amps, black albo, red speckled xhookeriana, brown speckled xhookeriana to name a few.

I found another nursery which has more Cps, it's located on the main road instead of turning left to Hee's, go straight on until you see a hindu temple. The nursery is on the right hand side of the road with a zink roof shack in front near the road. Don't know the name, this shop sells the Cps at very reasonable price, I ended up buying a red speckled xhookeriana (with red underside leaves) for only Rm20.

Jonathan was saying that that is a fake. They tie the ionathas on a ball cage of some sort. That make sense as looked too round and symatrical to be natural.

Hey did you also see that hairy tillies? Tarence told me the name but I forgot (I've got a bad memory). Such a beauty. I wanted it so much but RM90 ++ was a little too much for me at the moment. On top of that Tarence was saying it is a challenge to grow that fella well. So.. bye, bye to that fella... Another time...

yep, the xerographica would be a better buy than the hairy tills which require max sun & have to be protected from rains otherwise they may lose their white fine hairs.....a bit difficult to maintain.

In fact when I asked Hee Garden they told me Evergreen plants is cutting down on bringing in tills because not many people here are buying them and its expensive to bring in . Then they said all of the nurseries have got their new respective lands and will go their separate ways once the government gives the green light. I guess no choice but to wait on them to get anything.

Re: Updates on Sg. Buloh Nurseries
« Reply #58 on Dec 21, 2007, 5:57pm » Ok, in the past 1-2 weeks Clare and Sam from Singapore has contacted me asking about the status of the nurseries in Sg. Buloh. So, since I was on leave today, I decided to visit Sg. Buloh and "interview" the nurseries there to find out more about their move.

Ok, here's a simple map of Sg. buloh nurseries...

We will be entering the nursery area from the Sg. Buloh hospital side, ie. south of the map.

All the nurseries in area "A" has been demolished and cleared right up to the Hindu Temple. Construction is going on now. According to one person there it's a road. The nurseries have been moved to 2 new locations in Bukit Rahman Putra (near your place jonathan) and Subang. Could not find out the exact location. Some of them moved to other places on their own. The story behind it was that the land on which they have been operating for so long is actually govenment land and some of the nurseries were operated by illegals.

Area "B" nurseries are required to move out by Chinese New Year next year, ie. 7-8 February 2008. They would be placed in the 2 new locations mentioned above. However, some of them told me they are moving to their own place elsewhere.

It seems there was a mega sale some time in September this year as the nurseries wanted to clear their stocks before they move. Hmm, I did not know about that. What a waste.

As of now, the authorities have told those nurseries in area "C" that they need not move. So there will still be that small section of nursery in Sg. Buloh including Hee Nursery.

Re: Updates on Sg. Buloh Nurseries
« Reply #59 on Dec 29, 2007, 8:50pm » I just took a vacation to Kuala Lumpur and I made it down to Sg Buloh. I found two nurseries in particular with a large selection of pitcher plants. One of them is Hee nursery which is mentioned earlier on in this thread. They also have some saracenia, Venus flytrap's, and air plants. There is another nursery that is on the main road a little further down after the Hindu temple. They've got quite a lot of pitcher plants there, but no air plants.

I think that the prices of the pitcher plants are quite expensive, they can go from 75 to 150 ringgit for a pot of Miranda or Ventrata. I didn't see too much else, there was one bical and a few Vikings at Hee's. They were all going for at least 100 to 200 ringgit. There was also one black pitcher plant which appears to be a ramispina. It was very heat stressed though, the growing tip was curled like a pig's tail, and it had many black spots on it. I didn't ask the price of that one.

The second nursery after the Hindu Temple had a good buy, they are selling truncata, at a reasonable size, for 20 ringgit each. Besides that, they also have another type of pitcher plant where the pitcher is very narrow, it looks just like Miranda but it is much more narrow. I don't know what it is but they are selling it as if it is a Miranda. It's probably some other species and if you want to give that a try, I think those all the neps you can find at Sg. Buloh.

Other than that, you have to call the nursery up every time and check when the new stock comes in, according to the staff there, once new stock is in, the regular customers go down and buy everything on the same day and then there's nothing left except for the 50 pots of Miranda that each nursery has in the back.

« Reply #60 on Dec 30, 2007, 10:35am » Hee nursery neps are a little more pricy compared to the rest. The plant that you saw with a narrower pitcher is probably a fusca hybrid. I was told by Lau before that if the stems have a little redish colouration, it is a fusca hybrid.

You were in KL and you did not visit 4Ze Plant nursery? You should have given Fauzi a call. He sells mainly neps. If you ever had the idea or dream of wanting to just be surrounded by Neps from top to bottom, left, righ, front and back, enter his nursery. Hee, hee, I had that dream and when I first entered his nursery, it was heaven and dream come true. He also carries some VFTs, Sarras and orchids.

The same ones as those found in Cameron Highlands. The plant are quite huge according to the nursery, about 3 inches in diameter.

So if you do not have them and one one, better quickly get it.
