I have a small VFT divided from my large mother plant. It is around 50 cent in diameter and was doing well until recently. The whole plant started to turn dark brown (going to turn black). All leaves and traps are still intact (still rigid not soggy). Is this a sign of the plant going dormant?
I have removed the water tray and try to keep the media barely moist and give it shadier environment. Is this the correct treatment for VFT going dormant? Will post photo later. Thanks. Last edited by powersensor; 6th February 2009 at 05:17 PM. |

your VFt sounds like it is going dormant.
however, it would be useful if you could post a picture and yes, just keep the media moist and not soggy but at the same time dont let it dry out . |

Yar. The media turned green because the plant was given full sunlight while it was still active. Now giving it shadier place.

That doesn't seem good. Cut down on the watering, there is a possiblity that your plant is beginning to rot. Dormant plants would not go black without frost and snow.

Here's what I'd do.
Remove the plant from the media, swirl it in clean water to slightly clean it off the existing media. Remove all rotting leaves- you don't have to tear it all away, just cut the blackened part. Transplant in fresh media that's not too wet. 50:50 peat:sand should be okay, fresh sphagnum moss would be better. Reduce lighting & watering. Make sure it's not too damp. |

Thanks for the advise Athene. I have just repotted the plant into new media. (media is soaked and squeeze dry so it is barely wet). I also noticed the rhizome of the plant is still healthy. Hope it will recover.
