Drosera along the Great Ocean Road
I was down along the Great Ocean Rd in Victoria the other day for work and decided to pull over while I had a few minutes to spare and took these pictures. I hope you enjoy them.
This is an example of the habitat. The area is quite open. The Drosera's grow in areas where there is strong light for the majority of the day. One of the other plants from the area. I don't know what it is but it looked pretty good. Drosera auriculata Drosera whitakkeri It is still early in the season and flowering is just commencing. The day was quite overcast. This is a D. auriculata. It doesn't show very well in the flower but it was a pale pink color. D. auriculata again A shot looking along the Great Ocean Rd over some D. auriculata. |

Re: Drosera along the Great Ocean Road
Great pictures Adam! So amazing that they are growing just beside the road. Media seems quite dry as compared to how I woudl grow them. Was it dry?
This area looks like it was only there when the road was built. Do you think there is regular maintenance of the grass there where they are cut?

Cheap fare to Victoria now. Who is going? Adam I hope you have a big mini van to accomodate all of us. On the way back we buy plants from Triffid park to sell here to finance our trip.
Beautiful... thank you for sharing.

Re: Drosera along the Great Ocean Road
Thanks guys. Compared to where you are David it is very dry. The soil is predominantly sand with clay mixed in. The tubers extend down into the soil a fair way to ensure they get the moisture they need in the winter. In the summer the soil is very dry, you could say it is baked, and that is when the plants retreat to the tuber.
This area is subjected to some mowing though it isn't very often. The major mowing program down there would really commence as the plants are becoming dormant to reduce the chances of a fire. The road side verge is mown more regularly and there aren't too many plants there. |
