I bought a beautiful pitcher plant on 5/2 and hung it in my back yard under some ligustriums. Great diffused light, high humidity (Central Fla.), a little water in the 9 pitchers... Today I found it on the ground with all the stems scattered around. I suspect squirrels. Many of the root ends were gnawed off. Is there any way to salvage it? Helppp. Link to Post - Back to Top Logged bactrus Full Member member is offline Joined: Sept 2007 Posts: 235 Location: Penang Re: Helppppp! « Reply #1 on May 13, 2008, 10:07am » Trap then drown the critter. Use rat trap with very ripe banana or papaya for bait. Best thing to do is built a green house or a simple cage. Those thin square holes wire metal are cheap and easy to DIY.Squirrels, rats or some other pests cant go through them.Alternatively, having a dog also helps to keep away unwanted pests. In front of my house is jungle and there are lots of squirrels there but non dare to come near my house because i have a hungry dog. « Last Edit: May 13, 2008, 10:39am by alienfx »Link to Post - Back to Top Logged phissionkorps Advisor - Nepenthes member is offline if you don't grow from seed, toughen up! They are good meat and a "green" meat too, since they are wild, and there are literally over a billion in the US alone. They attacked his plants as well. You'll be able to find some ideas there as well on how to prevent them from attacking your neps. Hmmm, interesting. It seems squirrels worldwide find neps a toy to chew and pluck on. By the way, please indicate your location under your profile so that members have an idea where you are from. This is compulsory in PetPitcher. Thanks buddy. « Last Edit: May 13, 2008, 5:17pm by David »Link to Post - Back to Top LoggedMy Wantlist David Administrator member is offline Joined: Dec 2006 Gender: Male Posts: 2,326 Location: Kuala Lumpur Re: Helppppp! « Reply #6 on May 13, 2008, 12:18pm » Ok, found the thread. I will try repotting and putting in a plastic bag, maybe with a touch of rooting hormone? I don't know what to do about the squirrels. They are everywhere. My 2 shelties are worthless at herding squirrels or lizards. Time to get another cat!!! I think, if I get the plant to grow again I will name it Lazarus and keep it on the back porch. It's not as lovely as the original location, but I haven't had any squirrels come in yet! Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. I so hate to toss the little pitchers away.
