LJ_Tan - Basals are new growth points started from the rootball of the plant, that in most species, grow to become to new plants. Offshoots from the mainstem (like as if you were taking a cutting of a nep, and it came out of the side of the stem just above the leaf) are activated nodes that start out, generally if something has damaged the main vine, but in some species, just form them because it is their habit.
N. ampullaria basals profusely, and produces new plants on many of the nodes along the vine, however most of these basals and nodes do not continue to grow out into full plants in this species, it is mainly this species way of covering as much ground as possible to obtain as much leaf litter/debris as possible to better suit its growth and life style
