I was repotting my truncata into a courser mix today. I soon found that impossible as the roots has spread nearly 6x6x6 inches. The total weight of the plant and the soil clinging to the roots was 1 pound. I moved it to a smaller pot.





Here it is in a new, smaller pot.

Why 'bully' it by restricting root growth instead of using a larger pot so it'll grow bigger? Nice truncata btw..

Truncata's do better rootbound and I am short on space.

Wow thats a big rootball...............I always wish my plants when i repot them i mean as not changing the media just putting it in a diffrent media i always hope that the roots will come out that way so that it won't stress the plant that much cause theres hardly any removal of soil on the roots or anything disturbing it...

I had to send out a mirabilis echo. in a trade and when I pulled it out of the pot all the soil came with it. Very extensive rootball I paid extra for shipping because of all the soil stuck to the roots.

Your right about all the soil in the pot coming with it, that white pot in the background was the one I was using. Everything except the bark at the bottom was attached to the roots. Just curious, my truncata produced its biggest pitcher while in a 4 inch pot. It was 7 inches tall. I repotted it into that white pot. The summer was very hot and the next 3 pitchers were only 5 inches tall. Do you think the decrease in later pitchers was caused by the heat or overly large pot?

A bigger pot will most probally not be the problem...I would say heat stress if your plant is a highland truncata....For lowlanders i think they'll do just fine....But there was a discussion i remembered somewhere in the forum which were saying that a plant might take longer to root on to bigger pots..

I would beg to differ and say truncata will do quite well in a deeper pot than usual. Or so multiple people that have been growing them for decades have told me. I can't think of any neps that grow better when root bound off the top of my head, but it is 3:30 in the morning....
In my experience, the only reason to purposely rootbind one is to attempt to induce flowering.

Its been two months since I repotted my truncata. Here it is now. That's a 6 inch pot it is in.
