Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
Bical means 'Nepenthes Bicalcarata'. The mold that grew on Marvin's media is slime mold. It thrives on tap water that is full of chlorine and minerals. Also, low sunlight encourages its growth. Can be unsightly and disgusting, but doesn't kill CPs. For some reason though, I find that it stunts my nep's growth. Use a spoon or something to scrape it off and stop using tap water for sometime.
I am lucky that all my water supply is filtered by a Rocket brand filter before being used. So tap water is considerably safe for me. Tap water won't kill CPs the way most books describe. Water in Malaysia is quite clean. Also, all CPs don't mind a little minerals to absorb once in a while. Only if the minerals accumulate, especially CHLORINE, does it harm the CP. Neps are by far from my point of view, the hardiest CP that can tolerate tap watering. So in conclusion, tap watering is 25% dangerous and 85% usable. Erm, Allen, perlite and peat moss can be bought at Ace Hardware store. Generally speaking, I feel that peat moss is more suitable for germinating seeds. And LFS can be used for almost all CPs, except alkaline lovers.
