My first Venus Flytrap

Today I visited Green Penang flora exhibition at AutoCity-Juru and found some nice VFT for sale (better looking than those found at Giant) . I finally bought one home. Here is a photo of the plant. It is a typical green with red coloured traps.

Unfortunately during my journey home the plant was shaken and now most of the traps are closed. I was wandering how long will it take before the traps will re-open.

I was told by the seller to give it plenty direct sunlight and keep the water tray filled. Hope it won't die on me.

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

I have a question. Is it safe to put it under direct sunlight (very hot) the whole day? Scared that the plant might get fried. (morning sun is not that bad but afternoon sun is extremely hot.) Or are there any method to get full sun and yet do not get the extreme heat?

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

WOW! Finally you got some seller who got knowledge on the plant. Grow directly under FULL SUN!

Yes VFT has no problem to grow under full sun

hmmm.. worry about fried VFT? hehe :2thumbup:

my situation is I make sure I water the plant enough in the morning everyday and check it during evening time to see whether the soil media is moist or not. If dry, you have to water again.

normally i will just soak it in a plastic ware full of water as long as the growing condition is windy and sunny

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Don't have to worry about the hot sun, mine have been "toasted" under Malaysian hot sun for years, they are still alive and growing fine  As long as a water tray is provided, and always keep an eye on the water in the tray as what Jeff suggested.

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

It costs me RM20 (firm). Ask for discount and the guy may throw in a small water tray FOC.

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Totally agree with everyone's suggestion with Full sun, however I'd just like to add, that what you want to avoid is overheating the medium and therefore the roots and bulb. How to do so? Actually already mentioned, just make sure that there is water tray under it. The rule of thumb is 1 inch or 2 inches of water, but then it depends on how deep your pot is. It loves rainwater too by the way!!!

wow! congrats.. what variety if your VFT?

from experience, my VFT has only been devouring flies lately. and surprisingly, the flies are more or less the same size!

i see ants crawling over the plant sometimes but so far is has eaten none.

beetles? none too.

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Yes but they prefer flies. Avoid feeding them insects that are too big. Don't let any wings/feelers etc. stick out as this will cause the trap to rot.

malowie 19th September 2008 11:56 PM

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

well, i just let nature take its course.. i dont feed my VFT insects that i catch cuz im worried the plant will get overfed and the traps would not live long.

Mine has only eaten flies about 2-4 times. They sometimes eat beetles, ****roaches, moths, big ants, mosquitoes and other insects.

malowie 20th September 2008 12:06 AM

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

wow! ****roaches?

thats awesome.

ur traps must be huge.

mine only eats flies all along.. maybe my place got no diversity of insects.. haha

my old house that had a lot of palm trees had plenty of wasps.. they always become my old sarra's meals...

My vFt SMALL LAH. Only the ****roaches are babies. My sarra and nep catches a lot of black ants. (and i grow an ant plant in between two neps and it seems to attract ants.

My neps love fungus nats. It's sort of ironic because they nats develop in the plants' soil then then nep eats them. I just think it's weird since the pitchers are getting the nutrients from the same soil they are growing in instead of the roots.

And you don't have to divide your flytraps if you dont want to, provided that the pot is large enough. I know what you mean about a headache, though. Dividing plants is hard work. If you make sure that you have the clump in a large enough pot, the plants can really look amazing when they are growing, so you won't have to divide them up.

You can modify the picture so that it takes up less space. Just lower the quality or make the picture smaller.

Also you don't have to use such a large font size. It'll be just fine if you use the default one.

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Yah. The font size looks TOO BIG!!

Hi Guys,

i've done surfing online, there's one VTF species with the trap size of 1 1/2 inch. Is this kind of VTF can be found in Malaysia. I've bought 2 normal size VTF. 1 pot in Cameron Highland the other at the flower fair at Botanical Gardens. I was wandering whether the giant trap size VTF can be found.

It is not defanately. It is depends on gene in the VFT. Not all VFT will grow upwards

kentosaurs 29th December 2008 11:47 PM

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Hi Varhoon

Like casey said it depends on the variety of VFT........But for those which produce that head upwards round (frrthey normally produce this kind of leaves during the peak of summer....And there are types which hug the floor the whole year round n(rosette)....Growth normall starts on late winter and early spring where the VFT produce smaller ground hugging leaves and traps.....And as summer approaches like i said just now........

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Well, well, well. Kenneth, lemme guess, that info you got from savage garden book?

Typicals are usually rosseted, but will hold thier traps upright during summer. Some types do not hold their traps upright. But I agree that sunlight really plays an important role in the position of the trap.

Cheers

plantlover 30th December 2008 11:58 PM

Re: My first Venus Flytrap

Well mine get the same amount of sun light but are producing different types of leaves. My green VFT is growing from long upward leaves to rosette form while my akai ryu is growing from rosette form to upward tall leaves.
