Why my VFT grow like weeds? Looks untidy, all the leaf grow straight up, not like yours.

Yours is a combination of many many VFTs plants....i agak got about 6 VFTs there...and they are all sprouting spring time leaves......some remain like that all the time, some will follow the seasons a bit...meaning dormant, summer leaves etc, depends on your plant`s genetic heritage i guess. I suggest you break it up, the poor thing looks congested to me. You can wash off all the medium, then see the whilte bulbs below.....just separate it according to which petiole belongs to which bulb......then you can start selling VFTs. heheh.

as far as i am concerned, yes, akai ryu = red dragon......sorry, i`m not so much into variety names.....if i don`t have it, i want it ! that`s my basic rule of thumb.

Errr. I have about 37 VFTs in the garden...or more I think. Heheh, lost count. some admittedly do not do well or go into dormancy. So if your VFTs don`t look healthy now, perhaps re-look into their conditions or mebbe it`s just going into dormancy. Don`t throw away a VFT coz the leaves dried up or turned black...wash off all the medium & see if the bulb is still white. If it is, keep it in a dark place for 3 or 4 months. It might work....

Yes, aki ryu = red dragon.

Tarence's is nice. Did you grow it under full sunlight, Tarence? It looks quite red.

Bifurcatum, your vft look like getting insufficient of sunlight, quite green, try repotting them, and provide them with more sunlight. As much as you can and as long time as you can.

But it depends on what form you have, too. Some VFT will grow upright, some grow ground hugging form regardless of the season, some grow very fast and some grow relatively slow. It is difficult to identify a VFT if the VFT is not a really different appearance form for instance cup trap. With poor growing condition, two different forms could just look the same. I don't know what form bifurcatum have, but if it is a "Fast", it should named "D. Fast" (Dionaea muscipula "Fast") and not "V. Fast". But we can't simply put the name to a VFT if it is not from the named clone. For example, you can not name your VFT as "D. Fast" when you see it grows fast, even a VFT grown from seed of a red dragon for instance, you can't call it as red dragon, the offspring from a certain form grown from seeds may grow differently from the parent plant. Hence, a plant propagated from tissue culture, leaf cutting, part of the parent plant or division from a "red dragon" could only called as "red dragon".

I suspected the one we bought from Sungai Buloh was not a red dragon, with the recent weather (not much sun light), my red dragon grow quite red and that red VFT from SB doesn't show the red colouration as much as the red dragons I have.

hi cactustts : thx for the compliment. yes, they are grown under max sunlite conditions. the younger VFTs tend to have a more brilliant red `inside` trap whereas the older ones tend to be a lil` greener. Some of my 1 to 2 year olds used to be almost purple inside....this holds true for this particular variety. Cheers.

To share, I also bought one so-called red VFT from sg buloh recently ( about 1 month ago ). It`s not retaining its colouration as well.

It's so funny how that Sg. Buloh VFT does not retain it's red coloration. I bought a few for myself too and I thought my lighting was not enough as I grow them under artificial lights. But it seem the same for you guys too, even when you grow it under direct sun, the colours are also not red.

I repotted a few baby plants from the main pots and these are growing very well for me. New leaves are red. Lets see when they get as big as the adult plant whether the they can still maintain its red colour.

I have a red dragon I got from a nursery in Australia and it has new red leaves.

Now since that u all mention it, i also think that the Sg Buloh vft is not an akai ryu. The new traps of my VFT is getting greener, the dark red part is only in the mouth. I provide them with full sunlite from morning till evening..
