Some Nepenthes from Kelantan
Hi folks...
Been away for the weekend to Kelantan with pieceslim, it's been a very interesting trip for me coz I managed to see a few more neps in the wild for the first time. Lim also quite happy to catch some interesting fish that might be the first time ever recorded in Malaysia, I'm sure he's busy running around to get some scientific documentation and proof to confirm that... Thanks to Lim for sharing experience how/where to look for wild neps. I'll let the pics do the talking.... N. benstonei bush N. benstonei seedling's pitcher Various forms of N. benstonei lower pitcher The one and only N. benstonei with all green lower pitcher N. benstonei intermediate pitcher N. benstonei upper pitcher N. benstonei seedlings Natural hybrid of N. benstonei x N. mirabilis Close up shot of the pitcher, interesting shape Another N. benstonei x N. mirabilis plant An interesting pitcher form of N. benstonei x N. mirabilis |

Re: Some Nepenthes from Kelantan
It must have been an interesting trip. Nice pictures and thanks for sharing.
I noticed from the 13th picture from the bottom, there are some slugs near the sanguinea pitcher mouth. They seem to look like the same slugs I found in a sanguine pitcher in Genting Highlands (posted a picture some time back). I wonder what their relationship are with the pitchers since they are widespread and inhabit other sanguinea pitchers in different geographical locations. You guys found some really huge sanguinea picthers there. Your pictures are making me feel "itchy" to organise another trip to see neps in the wild. I just realised that some of the bestonii pitchers look like N. mirabilis x thorelii or N. thorelii especially when they are red in colour.

Re: Some Nepenthes from Kelantan
Hi David,
Yes, you're correct on both counts. Most pitchers of sanguinea got slugs in them, however I noticed most of the pitchers that hold slugs are those with decomposing insects left over in the pitcher fluids, perhaps it's a kind of symbiotic relationship?? I have also noticed some features of N. benstonei looks similar to N. thorelii and N. sanguinea, perhaps it's close proximity that's close to Thai's border and the Banjaran Titiwangsa range?? Some N. benstonei seedlings also display the same "ground hugging" characteristic and "rubra" coloration of N. albomarginata.... It's certainly very interesting to observe all these first hand in the wild, one can gain a lot of insight and hopefully learn how to be a better nep grower... Haha... I always "itchy" for more wild nep outings... Hi Ken, No, those N. mirabilis bush was found in lower elevation swamp area. N. mirabilis "hot lip" was found in drier lower mountain habitat around 300-400m. Last edited by NepNut; 20th January 2009 at 02:45 PM. |

Re: Some Nepenthes from Kelantan
Ken,
The sanguineas, are they also found around Bukit Bakar, or they from another location. Also at what elevations were they found? Choong |
