New Nepenthes
« Thread Started on Jun 3, 2008, 9:37pm »
Hi to all nepenthes experts, just came back from Malaysia and would just like to say thank you to David for pointing me to the right direction (Fauzi). I visited Fauzi's nursery last wed with my 3 yr old son Ramon, I paid RM13 for taxi going to Ampang. While my son played with Fauzi's daughter and nieces, he gave me a tour around. What a sight to see, many varieties of nepenthes and other CPs that made me drool and made me want to take everything home.

Here's the list of what I got:
N. Ampullaria - red speckle
N. x Coccinea
N. Rafflesiana
N. Bicolorata
N. x Hookeriana
N. Gracilis ( a gift)

I just had planted them this afternoon in their owm respective pots, will post pics soon!

Again thanks for David and for the hospitality and gift from Fauzi.

I just put them in small tupperware containers then I put it in my luggage for checked - in, did not have any trouble bringing them back in the Phils.

Thanks! It was my first time in Malaysia and I would say that I liked your city, I wish I could go back again soon and go to other places. I was meaning to join you guys last friday for your TT (Teh Tarik gathering) but was really pressed for time. Maybe next time!

here are some of the nepenthes I got from Fauzi, and they're still recovering from the stress, just had them replanted this week after almost 6 days since I got them.

Applebee Next time? So soon? You are so hooked! I think that you have most of what I am interested in actually. Actually in the list you posted, I have None in my collection. My priority now are hookeriana and Bicalcartas, so you have got that covered yourself.

If I may suggest, you should also consider the endemic ones in the Philippines, but we all know it's hard to get them locally. In fact I hope to order a Truncata from somewhere else in the near future. Local ones that are of interest (Alata, ventricosa are easy to get right?)

N. Truncata (the rat eater)
N. Bellii

Oh and have you seen pictures of the foaming Nepenthes? That got my attention
N. Lowii (not native to the Philippines, but very interesting)

The way I see it, if a Filipino CPer has one in his collection, with luck and his kindness he might be able to "share" some to others.... and of course vice versa.

Yup you're right Arvin, I've been bitten by the addiction bug! I'd really like to consider the ones we have here and would be nice if we can propagate it and share it with others, thus we don't deplete what's out in the forests. Maybe we can get permits to get and go get some hiking to the different provinces. Maybe we should explore this, what do you think? Other Malaysians, on weekends go out and look for plants in different places.

Where did you see the foaming Neps?

Btw, here are the list of Nepenthes found in the Philippines:

Highlanders
N. argentii1
N. burkei2
N. deaniana3
N. mantalingajanensis3
N. mindanaoensis3
N. mira3
N. peltata

Highland-Lowland
N. alata
N. copelandii3,6
N. philippinensis3
N. sibuyanensis1
N. truncata3
N. ventricosa2

Lowlanders
N. bellii3
N. merrilliana3,4
N. mirabilis5
N. petiolata3
N. saranganiensis3

1-Central Philippines.
2-North Philippines.
3-South Philippines.
4-Danser (1928) also cites this species as occurring in
Sulawesi, but Jebb & Cheek (1997) disagree.
5-Also in Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia,
Sulawesi, Maluku, New Guinea, Australia, Java,
Indo-China, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Palau.
6-Distinct from N. alata (R.Cantley, pers. comm. 2007)

Lowlanders

Don't know if allowed Mod please correct if I am wrong in posting link to another forum:

Daniel the foam pictures can be found here: http://pitcherplants.proboards34.com/ind....lay&thread=6021 if you can't find it look for "sherbet anyone?"

Blew my mind when they explained that it is natural, I thought it was a joke! Apperently the foam is for birds not insects, coz I think insects would get trapped on the foam, which might be an extra, it attracts birds, which in turn poos in the pitcher and that is how they get "fertilized" Cool eh? In fact I was wondering the plant evolved into using foam to probably really trap insects in it's foam to attract birds, though maybe some birds might want to use the foam as food (they say it's sweet).

But try to actually imagine how these plants evolved into this type of specialization! Really really wonderful! Nepentheses Rock!

Sorry mods, I don't know if I can post a link to another forum. My apologies.

Hi Arvin, those pitchers look weird and eerie! But those are really huge pitchers! Thanks for sharing.
