Default Indoor Orchid Garden

hi, im Ari, Malaysia staying in Jakarta, here are some photo of my small indoor orchid garden, most of the species i have are wild Indonesian orchids, its quite easy and cheap to get wild orchids here except you need to be care full not to buy fakes, but on some lucky days you could find some rare and new stuffs.

el cheapo hybrid orchids section...belongs to the wife so dare not throw them away..

i like this very much...cool eh ...mini rubber tree

the wild section....many of them are not properly ID until they flower, cant really trust what the seller tells you as most collectors are simple village folks

this one i collected myself in Garut ,West Java...Malleola ligulatta

this one is from Tasik Malaya, West Java.......Bulbophyllum macranthum

got this last year from Irian Jaya, i collected quite afew from areas around Sorong, but this the is only one that survived....Bulbophyllum arfakianum

Cymbidium Rossum....a new find from Jambi , Sumatera. it was said that the flowers will grow up right vertically...well thats what the man said...

bulbophyllum laxiflorum....got it from the nusery...it looks wild to me

luisia javanica...collected this from Cianjur West Java...a common plant in this area

this is my favourite....simply cos i paid quite abit for this...Ascocentrum Aurantiacum

another rare one Dendrobium Anosmum "Ambon" from Leste Timor...rare bcos Timor is no longer part of Indonesia

some of my pitchers

Hi Ari,

You've really done well in decorating your airwell. It certainly does have the serene atmosphere with the addition of Buddha statues . I see you are having a vertical garden in the making. Very nice!

thanks guy..actually i would have done more except the house doesnt belongs to me, sort like rented, well, in Jakarta when you rent a house its not like in Malaysia where pay monthly, here you pay everything in advance, for example 3 years, no choice la since my business is in Jakarta so need to rent and theres not much one can do to the garden if its a rented one...soon or later you have to give it up
One question i need to ask the experts and sifus here, do orchid do well in cooler climate? i have a house , a retirement home actually in west java, its about 1200 meters above sea level, temp about 20`C to 24`C all year round, misty in the morning up to 9am and its quite wet has it does get a lot of rain ...i know hybrid pitcher plants dont do well here expect for the local species ( they it call highland pitchers)
is it possible or anyone has any experience planting wild lowland orchids in these condition?

thanks in advance

Hi Ari,

You are very lucky to have a retirement home there. With that kind of temperature provided with excellent ventilation, you can grow almost everything.

OMG Ari, this is exactly what my dream space is like!!! I've always wanted a house with an 'airwell' section. It's like a house biosphere, the air within the walls is always humid. One thing though, does the sunlight shine through the section all year round, I mean like when the sun rays shift during certain parts of the year?

Like Andy says, your retirement home is a dream garden waiting for you. The only limitation is space. Most lowland orchids can be grown from anywhere at sea level to highland conditions.

I really really love to grow orchids too, but currently I do not have enough niche space to grow wet sensitive orchids like paphios. I hope to grow them this way where they get enough bright light but won't be overexposed to rain. Or do you control their watering? Please advise, I'm already head over heels looking at your garden space!!
