Why irregular pitchers?

I have a plant for nearly 5 months.

When I just bought it, it came with relatively big pitchers.


But since then, pitchers have been growing irregular in size and colour.
Generally smaller than when I first acquired it. Including abnormal pitchers.



Plant seems to be doing fine, but the newest shoot looks growing on a much elongated stem.

Any comment on what could be the cause of small and irregular pitchers?

you have done a good job as it has grown 7 new healthy leaves for you!!

i think the reason of irregular and abnormal pitchers is because it does not have the former growing condition it has when you first bought it. i have this mature n. x gentle (with 4 inch pitchers) for about few months, until now it only produces abnormal lidless pitchers (less than an inch) like the one on the upper right of your sanguinea picture......still struggling to keep up to its former glory......

I think most nursery use ferterlizer on their neps. When i was in cameron highland, saw the bangla worker there put in slow release pellet fert into the neps pot. They told me to put 2-3 pellet per xl size plant once every 2 week. I had yet to try but intent to do some experiment with my common nep to find out whether that's true.

A bit of fertilizer will not harm nepenthes, and will help their growth.

Like Kevyn mentioned, I also think your nep still acclimatising to new growing environment especially this plant looks like a N. sanguinea or it's hybrid (intermediate - HL nep).

On fertilizing, I always add some Osmocote slow release fert into the media of my neps... so far no ill effect but if you put too much, you will get nep with large foilage without any pitcher...

hmm....i am still hesitating to put fertilizer for my neps.....currently using grofas blue for my orchids and they grow well and fast.....maybe use one of my hookeriana as lab rat for the test...

If you want to start trying, always start will lower dosage, preferably 1/4 and slowly work your way up.

Honestly speaking, I've tried foilar spray "liquid organic fert" but I encounter more bad side effect if compared to slow release fert pelletes applied in the media.

ok, noted on the dosage advice....

grofas blue is a chemical based fertilizer (correct me if i'm wrong) but at least it doesn't burn the leaves.......at least to my orchids......

foliar sprays will actually left some unsightly marks on the leaves right? or there are more worst side effects?

tzetan, like kevyn said, sorry to hijack your thread but this could be the answer you're looking for. Maybe by trying fert, your pitchers will be bigger.

at; dun forget sifu nepnut advice, fertilizing may önly produce bigger leaves but not pitchers, rmbr tht pitchers is not the ultimate end product tht the plant produce bcos if it has enuf nutrients, it will not produce pitchers.
